Under the date of December 13, 1944, the following item and photograph were received from the Government authorities for publication: “An Eighth Air Force Fighter Station, England -- Corporal George Cruickshank, 24, Hanna, Wyoming, gives the green light to P-47 Thunderbolts landing at an Eighth Air Force field in England, after a mission over Germany. He is an airfield controller in the 78th Fighter Group, commanded by Colonel Fredric C. Gray, Abilene, Texas. This group escorts Eighth Air Force heavy bombers on their attacks on targets deep in the Reich, and bombs and strafes Nazi communications and supply lines. Cpl. Cruickshank directs landings and take-offs from the field by lamp and radio.”
Cpl. Cruickshank is a former employee of The Union Pacific Coal Company at Hanna. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cruickshank, live there. (UPCCEM, February 1945)
George William Cruickshank was born May 22, 1920 in Hanna, Wyoming to George and Margaret Cruickshank. He married Phyllis Milliken on July 17, 1948 in Hanna, Wyoming. He died December 21, 1987 in Las Vegas, Nevada and was buried in the Rawlins, Wyoming cemetery. (Ancestry) (BL)
