People Images from the Past

Elmer Larson
Many of the wonderful people associated with the early history of Old Carbon and Hanna have passed away. Over time - friends, relatives and the media - have shared remembrances of them. This website is dedicated to all the wonderful people that were at some point in time a part of the Hanna Basin - may they always be remembered. Thank you to all the folks that have contributed to this effort.

Born: 1869
Died: Apr. 28, 1890

Note: The Daily Laramie Boomerang reported on April 28, 1890 that "Henry Ward was the only miner killed when the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine exploded. It took place yesterday afternoon in No. 1 mine at Hanna, the only victim being Henry Ward, who was instantly killed. Fortunately, the accident occurred on Sunday when the miners were not at work, or many would have been injured and killed.  Ward entered the mine with a light. There was gas in the mine and when Ward neared a position near the pumps the gas became ignited and exploded. He was killed and much damage was done, although it is said to be not so great but that work may be resumed in a few days." (Daily Laramie Boomerang April 28, 1890)

Note: Henry was killed in 1869 in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Rawlins, Wyoming. (BL)
