Cyprus Shoshone Coal Company

1987 - 1998 Coal Production

The Cyprus Shoshone Coal Company took control of the Carbon County No. 1 underground mine in Hanna, Wyoming in 1987. It was named the Shoshone No. 1 mine. Cyprus started production in 1987 and ended production in 1998. During the 12 years under Cyprus ownership, the Shoshone No. 1 mine produced 21,339,376 tons of coal with peak employment in 1991 of 192 workers. In 1996, one miner, Loid Caleb, was killed in the Cyprus Shoshone No. 1 mine. The Shoshone No. 1 was transferred in 1999 to the RAG Shoshone Coal Company. The Shoshone No. 1 mine had five drifts into the Hanna #80 coal seam with an average thickness of 20 feet. The mine had two working sections. One working section uses a remote controlled Joy 12CM-12 continuous mining machine, two Joy 10SC shuttle cars, a Fletcher CHDDR-13 double boom roof bolter and belt haulage. The other working section was a long wall that uses 140 Kloeckner- Becorit, 500-ton two-leg shields, an Anderson Mavor model 1000 shearer and belt haulage.
