For many years he was employed in the machine shop, and two years ago, 1928, in view of his loyal and conscientious services and failing health he was pensioned. Mr. Ekman has a son and daughter who live with him. Mrs. Ekman died in 1918 with flu. The son, Ott, is now employed in the mine in Hanna and the daughter, Bertha graduates from high school this year. Mr. Ekman, who is seventy years of age, was born in Sweden, September 11, 1861. A proud member of the Old Timers’ Association, he hopes to be able to attend the celebration this year. (UPCCEM, April 1931)
Note: Hanna Old Timer Passes - The community was saddened by the death of Nels J. Eckman [Ekman], one of Hanna's oldest Old Timers. Mr. Eckman had been ailing for several years but had been able to get around until a couple of months before his death on December 24th. Born in Sweden on September 11, 1861, Nels Eckman came to this country in 1890 to Carbon, Wyoming, and then to Hanna where he first worked at old No. 1 Mine; later he became Carpenter Foreman at which occupation he worked until he retired in 1928. He made one trip back to Sweden in 1908, returning to Hanna with his bride in 1910. Mrs. Eckman preceded him in death several years ago and Mr. Eckman was left to care for his family. Two sons have also passed away. He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, Bertha Eckman of Hanna and one granddaughter, Leslie Eckman of Sinclair, Wyoming.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on December 27th with Rev. Asmond Maxwell officiating, interment in Hanna cemetery. Pallbearers were William Nelson, Albin Klaseen, Robert Norris, Charles Mellor, Mandy Edlund, and Norman Smith. (UPCCEM, February, 1945)
