Note: Huhtala, Matte G. worked as a Timberman in the No. 1 mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. Matte and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was found on Sunday March 29, 1908, on day 2 after the explosion, identified and removed from the mine. He was buried in Plot 152 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Note: The community of Hanna was saddened by the removal from its midst of an Old Timer when Mrs. Ida Huhtala passed away on Friday, Sept. 6. Though she had been ill for some time and unable to get around very much, she was always cheerful and will be very greatly missed by her family and many friends. Mrs. Huhtala was born in Finland November 16, 1867. She came to Carbon, Wyo., in June 1888 and was married to Matt Huhtala on July 5th of the same year. After living in Carbon for a few years they moved to Washington state. They returned to Wyoming, living in Almy for a time, after which they came to Hanna, where Mrs. Huhtala had resided for 43 years. Mr. Huhtala had predeceased her in 1903. Mrs. Huhtala leaves to mourn her passing six children, John, Matt, Yalmer and Eli Huhtala, of Hanna. Mrs. Andrew Spence of Winton, and Sylvester Huhtala of Pasadena, California, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. John Huhtala and Mrs. Matt Huhtala and one grandchild, Darlene Huhtala. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on Sunday, September 8, with Rev. W.P. Wood officiating, with interment in the Hanna cemetery. (UPCCEM, October 1935)

Note: The community of Hanna was shocked by the sudden death of Charles Matt Huhtala, February 16th, found dead in his car several miles north of town where he had been attending his traps. Funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church and interment was made in the Hanna Cemetery. Matt Huhtala was born in Almy, Wyoming, February 6, 1892, and came to Hanna as a small child. He served overseas in the First World War as Corporal. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Matt Huhtala, and one daughter, Darlene; four brothers, John, Eli, and Yalmer of Hanna, and Sylvester of Alhambra, California; and one sister, Mrs. Andrew Spence, of Winton, Wyoming. All attended the funeral. (UPCCEM, April 1945)
