It appears that while he and some other playmates were playing in a shanty at the rear end of the house the boys indulged in a pillow fight and it appears that while Elmer was sitting on a chair in front of an iron bar which is placed across the building and it so happened that this bar reached to the height of the boy's neck, while sitting down. One of his playmates threw a pillow at him which struck him on the head. Elmer, not seeing the pillow being directed at him was unprepared for the blow, which threw his head back, striking the back of his neck against the bar and dislocated his neck. The unfortunate boy passed away in about one minute after the accident. The doctor was summoned immediately but on arrival pronounced the boy dead. Much sorrow is expressed in Hanna over the unfortunate occurrence. The funeral was held on Sunday, January 22nd. (Medicine Bow Times, Jan. 27, 1922)

Note: "Third Victim - Herman Holm Meets Death in Hanna Mine - Buried by Falling Coal - Fired a Shot and When He Returned to Work the Roof Fell on Him - Coroner Jury Lays No Blame to Anyone - Herman Holm, an old timer at the Hanna mine was killed Thursday by another cave-in. He had just fired a shot which knocked out a prop and when he returned to the place where he was blasting a great body of coal fell from the roof and buried him. His son was killed in the explosion June 30 of last year. He was employed as a blacksmith up to that time then he went to mining. Coroner Bennett was in Hanna yesterday to hold the inquest and the jury consisted of T. H. Butler, Con Olafson and Alex Greenwood. They found the death was due to an accident caused by the blasting. This is the third man killed in the past month by similar causes. The roof, walls and props are so weakened by blasting that sometimes a small jar or several of them in succession causes the coal to fall. The blame can be placed on no one in particular as the officers of the mine exercise the greatest precaution and warn the employee to keep themselves from danger. Holmes remains were buried in the Hanna cemetery. (Rawlins Republican, Feb. 6, 1904)

Hoy, Andrew (Inquest) (MIR); Aka: Hoy A. (MM)
Born: 1878
Died: Mar. 28, 1908
Age: 30 y's
Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna No. 1 Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like Andrew Hoy - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
Note: Andrew Hoy worked as a Miner in the No. 1 mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. Andrew and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was not removed from the mine. (BL)
Note: Andrew and John Hoy were brothers. Both John, 34 years and Andrew, 31 years were natives of Prescot, St Helens, Lancashire, England and worked in mines local to that area. Andrew married Martha [nee Armson] in early 1907 and had no children. John Hoy was married to Ann [nee Duckworth] and had four sons ages from 3 years to 8 years. Both John and Andrew arrived in New York on the 19th October 1907 on their way to Hanna. Their brother-in-law Henry George Birchall, who was already in Hanna, had sponsored them both. Their sister Margaret was married to Henry George, and they would be uncles of Andrew Birchall who was working with his father in the mines. All four perished within months of the arrival of the two Hoy brothers. (John Baldwin, England)

Born: 1870
Died: 1929
Age: 59 y's
Note: One of the old timers of Wyoming and The Union Pacific Coal Company whose memory will always be dear to the pioneers who knew him, especially to that very real fraternity of folks, the Old Carbonites, is the late Mr. William W. Hughes. Mr. Hughes was born in Wales, at Llanberris, and came to the United States with his parents when he was a mere lad. For a number of years, the family made their home in the mining districts of Pennsylvania and in 1893 when Mr. Hughes was twenty-three years old he came west to Wyoming and to the little pioneer mining village now universally and affectionately known as “Old Carbon.” When the mines there were abandoned Mr. Hughes moved to Hanna, where he worked as haulage man, driver boss and pump man. In 1915, Mr. Hughes was married to Miss Catherine Davis at Golden, Colorado, and their home in Hanna was always the center of a congenial group of friends. Mr. T.H. Butler, Superintendent of the Rock Springs mines, was a lifetime friend of Mr. Hughes and always speaks of “Billy” in terms of affection and respect. After an accident in 1925 in which he lost an arm Mr. Hughes health failed and after a series of illnesses he died at the Hanna hospital in July 1928. He was a member of Rawlins Lodge No. 5, A.F. &A.M.; Garfield Chapter 4, R.A.M.; Ivanhoe Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar; Korean Temple of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and Wyoming Masonic Consistory No. 1; and Local Union No. 2335, U.M.W. of A. His passing left a gap in the ranks of the Hanna members of The Union Pacific Coal Company’s Old Timers’ Association, and a vacant spot in the hearts and affections of the many friends who’d loved the geniality and kindness, the worth and friendliness of this worthy pioneer. Miss Hughes had been ill but a short time. She contracted a heavy cold on Decoration Day and while her condition was quite serious for a short time she showed signs of improvement up to twenty-four hours preceding her death when pneumonia developed, and she sank rapidly. A pathetic feature of her demise is that her brother Tom who has been overseas for the past year landed in New York the day of his sister's death. He was notified of her illness, but not of her death, as it was impossible for him to obtain his discharge in time to be present at the funeral.
