Baillie, William D. (MIR) (MM)
Cemetery: Laramie, Wyoming
Born: 1884
Died: July 18, 1933
Age: 49 y's
Note: July 13, 1933 - W. D. Baillie. Findings of the investigation of the accident which occurred to W. D. Baillie, employed by the Union Pacific Coal Company at Hanna as a lamp-man and bathhouse attendant, wherein he was injured on July 13th about 10:45 A. M., which injuries caused his death on July 18th at 6:00 P. M. in the Hanna Miner's Hospital. Mr. Baillie and his son were engaged in replacing a locker chain over a pulley which had become loose, this pulley being attached to the roof of the bathhouse. This necessitated the use of a step ladder nine feet in height. Mr. Baillie ascended the ladder nearly to the top and it is presumed that he became overbalanced and reached for the light fixture which was hanging there to support himself. He was also holding the locker chain and on reaching the light fixture it gave him a shock. He was unable to let go of the light fixture until the power was turned off. He conveyed this information to his son, who was supporting the ladder, and he ran to the door of the bathhouse where the switches are located and turned off the power. As soon as the power was off Mr. Baillie fell to the floor, and it is assumed that he struck either against a pipe upright, 4 ft. 3 in. high, which is used for a handrail and to hold the locker chains, or on one of the benches, causing injuries that necessitated a surgical operation from which he did not recover. Electrical tests were made of the light fixtures by the electrician and no indications of a short could be detected. However, the electrician immediately after the accident placed himself in the same position as Mr. Baillie had been and he did feel a shock from the fixture. The ladder which was used was a substantial one. In the writer's opinion it was better than average step ladder. (MIR)
Note: William D. Baillie was Mildred Crank's father. (MM)
Note: W. D. Baillie was a member of the Old Timer's Association of The Union Pacific Coal Company. He entered service at Hanna in 1907. (History of Union Pacific Mines)
Note: Mr. William D. Baillie, Bath House Attendant and Lampman at Hanna, died July 19 from injuries received a few days previously. It appears he was standing on a 10-foot ladder endeavoring to repair a broken chain clothes-hanger when he lost his balance and was precipitated to the floor, sustaining contusions of back and scalp. Services were held at Striker Mortuary, Laramie, in charge of Rev. Decker, Baptist church. He leaves to mourn his sad taking off four grown children, his mother, Mrs. John Lenihan, three brothers - John and Fred of Laramie and Harman of Casper. William Baillie entered the service at Hanna in November 1907 as a Blacksmith Helper, and later on was made Blacksmith at mine No. 2. He was 49 years of age and a widower and was a member of the Old Timers’ Association. (UPCCEM, September 1933)
Note: Mr. Baillie was killed at the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 4 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Greenhill Cemetery in Laramie, Wyoming. (Ancestry) (BL)

Plot: Block 4 Lot 19
Born: Dec. 17, 1932
Died: July 20, 2013
Age: 80 y's, 7 m's, 3 d's
Note: Darrell L. Barnett, 79, died peacefully July 20, 2013, at Mountain View Living Center in Sheridan. His long, hard-fought battle with health problems is finally over. Darrell was born in a farmhouse near Fort Laramie, Wyoming on December 17, 1933, the third child of Ed and Bessie (Faith) Barnett. He grew up on a farm near Veteran, Wyoming, where he attended school before enlisting in the Navy in 1952. He served during the Korean War as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Alvin C. Cockrell. After being honorably discharged in 1956, he returned to Wyoming where he worked in the oilfields before joining the Cody police force and later the Wyoming Highway Patrol. It was while he was on the Highway Patrol that he met Sharon Thompson at a dance in Elk Mountain, Wyoming. Darrell and Sharon were married July 1, 1960, and started their life together in Hanna, Wyoming, where he worked for Rosebud Coal Sales Company. The couple had two sons, Monty and Jeff. In 1965, they moved to northern British Columbia where they staked some land and spent the next three years. After returning to the States, Darrell went to work for Palm Livestock, managing a ranch north of Hanna. When his sons entered high school, the family moved back to Hanna and Darrell returned to work as a coal miner at the Rosebud mine. In 1987 he and Sharon moved to Sheridan, where he was employed by Decker Coal, retiring in 1997. He was a fun person, always the life of the party, even if there was no party. He never met a stranger and would visit with anyone who wouldn’t walk away. He was full of music, a terrific dancer, and had the ability to play every musical instrument that he tried, some better than others. He spent much of his time panning for gold, searching for hidden treasures, and playing golf. He loved a good horse, a good dog, and good whiskey. Animals and children were drawn to him, and he had words of wisdom for every occasion. He was so proud of his sons and grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Eddie Barnett. He is survived by his wife Sharon, his sons Monty (Denise) of Denver, and Jeff (Allison) of Douglas, his sister, Dorothy Lafferty of Sheridan, his grandson Travis (Aimee) of Casper, his granddaughters Daryl and McKinsey, both of Douglas, and his great grandson Bhodin of Casper. He also leaves behind two step-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Bowthorpe, Ferris L.
Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "Feb. 13, 1941 - July 19, 1972; UTAH MM 2 US NAVY VIETNAM"
Plot: 399
Born: Feb. 13, 1941
Died: July 19, 1972
Age: 31 y's, 5 m's, 6 d's
Note: On July 19, 1972, at approximately 10:50 a.m., Ferris Bowthorpe, age 31, was electrocuted when his body came in contact with a 34,500-volt line, while working on a transformer station at the Rosebud Coal Sales Company, Hanna, Wyoming. Mr. Bowthorpe was married and the father of one minor child. Description of Accident: Mr. Bennington, Chief Electrician at Rosebud was in charge of moving transformers out of a trailer station. They were to be replaced by larger transformers. Mr. Bennington had assigned Mr. Bowthorpe, who has been employed by this company 4 years, 8 months as an electrician, and Jerry Davis, electrician helper, and Warren Pherris, welder, to the transformers. They were instructed as to the job procedure. Bowthorpe, Davis and Pherris were instructed to eat dinner at 11:00 a.m., as the high voltage line was to be de-energized at 12:00 noon, in order to work on the project. The fuses had been removed on the transformer lead-in line. The air gap switches were pulled and open. The only voltage at the station was on the high voltage side, which was approximately 8 ft. higher. Jerry Davis stated that Bowthorpe and he thought it was necessary to take the fuse holders off the plates on the transformer. They agreed not to go any higher than the porcelain bottom holder, which was de-energized. Davis turned his back to Bowthorpe and was taking clamps off the jumper when he saw a flash. He turned and saw Bowthorpe falling. The two men working on the 40R drill, which was about 225 ft. from the transformers, also saw the flash. Mr. Biggs, oiler on the drill, testified he saw Bowthorpe fall from the top of the high voltage side. It is believed that Bowthorpe climbed up on the cross beams near the 34,500 volt line and came in contact with the high-tension line. It is believed he fell approximately 17 ft. to the ground. Warren Pherris, welder, was the first man to reach Bowthorpe. He immediately began to administer artificial resuscitation. Davis called for an ambulance by radio. The victim was placed in the ambulance and resuscitation was immediately administered. Artificial respiration was also administered. This continued until the victim was pronounced dead by L.J. Miller, M.D., at the Memorial Hospital, Rawlins, Wyoming. (MIR) (BL)

Note: Charles H. Brooks Passes On: The death of Charles H. Brooks (Colored) [African American] at his home on Monday, April 5th, cast a gloom over the entire community. “Charlie” was born in Gordonsville, Virginia, on July 29th, 1862, and came north in August 1898 entering the service of The Union Pacific Coal Company at Hanna, remaining in service until about one year ago, when on account of poor health, he was compelled to retire. He affiliated with the Baptist Church at an early age and, with his good wife, accepted the responsibilities and leadership of church work and the organization and building of the First Baptist Church of Hanna.“Charlie” was of a kind and cheerful disposition, always speaking well of everyone, and believing in the ultimate good of everything. He always practiced the Golden Rule, as he journeyed through life, doing unto others as he would they should do unto him. By his honest and upright dealing with all men he earned and held the respect and esteem of not only those of his own race but of all whom he came in contact. Funeral arrangements were under the auspices of Middle West Lodge, No. 24, A. F. and A.M. (colored) of Rock Springs, and services were held at the First Baptist Church, Hanna, on Sunday, April 11th, 1926, at two P.M., the Reverend J.E. Allen, Secretary Inter-Mountain Convention of Colored Baptist Churches, officiating, assisted by the Reverend C.L. Wright, Pastor of the ME Church, Hanna. Interment took place in the Hanna cemetery, services at the grave being performed by the U.M.W. of A., and Middle West Lodge No. 24, A.F. and A.M., of which order deceased was an honored member. The love and esteem in which deceased was held was evidenced by the many beautiful floral offerings and the many friends, of all nationalities and creeds, that attended the ceremonies and followed the remains to their last resting place. Deceased leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, one daughter, Mrs. Leta Jones, residing at Norristown, Pennsylvania; two sisters, one residing at Norristown, Pennsylvania, and one at Gordonsville, Virginia. He served as the Elk Mountain town marshal for many years and volunteered on the city fire department as a fire fighter for 35 years. David was also a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity for many years and a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. After retirement he found great joy in wood working and made many items for his children and grandchildren and own home. David was an avid outdoors man and had a great love of camping, hunting, fishing and arrowhead hunting. While participating in all of these activities he was being a father and mentor to all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. David is also known for the love of auctions and buying and not so much selling vehicles. David was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Edna Herman Boles and Margrette Herman Livingston Coffee, his daughter Evelyn Ann Brooks Jacobsen, granddaughter Tammy Louise Wilhelm, and great granddaughters, Natasha Ranee Lee Manning and Christian Ann Louise Manning. David is survived by his wife of 72 years Louise Hope Buckendorf Brooks, four children, Karolyn, Linda, David and wife Shelley, and Don and wife Teresa, his grandchildren, Jim, Joe and Ron that he and Louise raised as their own children after the death of their daughter. He is also survived by his brother, Fred Brooks, 12 other grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 12 great great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Cemetery: Hanna
Plot: 214
Born: 1840
Died February 1, 1900
Age: 60 y's
Note: Charles Buehler is not listed on the Hanna Miner Memorial Monument and the mining death was not found in the Mine Inspector Report for 1900. This type of omission is usually caused when a miner - like in this case - died from the injuries received at the mine weeks or even months after the accident. The accident most likely occurred at the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine at Hanna. It was the only mine operating in Hanna at the time. (BL)
Note: Chas. Buehler, of Hanna, is being treated at the hospital for a badly injured leg. Mr. Buehler is the hoisting engineer at the mine at that place and sustained the injury by a fall last Monday - Rock Springs Independent. (Rawlins Republican, Jan. 24, 1900)
Note: Charles Buehler died in 1900 from an accident involving a fall. The accident of a badly injured leg is noted in the Rawlins Republican, Jan. 24, 1900, quoting the Rock Springs Independent. He is listed as a hoisting engineer. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1840. In 1869, he was listed as the forge master at Ft. Steele. He married Emma Rudersdorf on May 23, 1875, in Granville, Wy. In 1880, he was the UP station house foreman at Dana, Wy. He and Emma had 3 children. They got divorced sometime in the mid 1880s. His son Oliver Charles Buehler eventually joined him in Hanna, and Oliver is listed on the Hanna censuses from 1900-1940. Oliver married Jessie McDonald and they had one daughter, Margaret June, who became a musician, getting early piano instruction in Hanna. Charles Buehler is buried at the Hanna cemetery, lot 214, and the stone lists his dates. The paper did not note his death. (Emma is one of my great great aunts) (Jane Nelson, Feb. 2021)

Burnham, Edward Jr. (Monument); Burnham Edward D. (MIR); Burnham, E. Jr. (MM)
Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "Burnham, Edward Jr.; 1932 - 1950"
Plot: 409
Born: 1932
Died: 1950
Age: 18 y's
Note: Edward D. Burnham, on December 5, 1950, at 5 p.m., Lyman Fearn, Coal Mine Inspector, made an investigation into the cause of the accident wherein, Edward D. Burnham, American, age 18, married, no children, an employee of the Union Pacific Coal Company, Hanna No. 4A Mine, experience 2 weeks, was fatally injured. Accompanied by Hodge Burress, Mine Superintendent and Frank Peternall, Safety Engineer, the inspector visited 2 ½ 3 D entry where Edward D. Burnham was employed as an apprentice motorman. The men found that Edward D. Burnham was coming out of the top entry down the slant with a six-ton Goodman motor with two loaded cars behind the motor. The motorman Domingo Olives was running alongside of the motor putting the real cable out of the way of the motor. Frank Urtado, Joy operator and Bernard Rippath, crewmember, were riding on the back of the loaded cars. On reaching the slant frog the motor swayed, and for some unknown reason Edward D. Burnham partly closed the controls and gave the brake wheel two or three turns, then stepped in front of the moving trip and was caught by the motor. This was his first day as apprentice motorman and was working under the direction of the Unit Foreman, George Crookshank and motorman Domingo Olives. He had taken two other trips to the main entry during the morning. This accident occurred at 11:15 A.M. The motor was reported in good mechanical condition and the trip did not appear to be out of control. The trip ran about 30 feet and stopped, not being derailed. There was 6 feet clearance on the low side of the entry and 17 feet on the high side. The reel cable was hooked on the high side. Apparently, this man became confused or lost his balance, as there was no reason for him to leave the trip. (MIR)
Note: Edward Burnham was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 4A mine in Hanna. He was buried in the Hanna cemetery in Plot 409. (BL)

Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like William Burns - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
Note: William Burns worked as a Laborer in the No. 1 mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. William and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was not found consequently it was not removed from the mine. (BL)
Note: William Burns was killed in the March 28, 1908 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. His body was not recovered from the mine. (BL)

Note: Sorrow was expressed on every side when it became known that Mr. T.H. Butler had passed away at Ogden, Utah, Tuesday, July 9th. Mr. Butler, since his retirement in June 1939, had been in indifferent health, but his death came entirely unexpectedly. It is difficult to write an adequate obituary of him who was a close personal friend of many of The Union Pacific Coal Company staff. While in Hanna on Thursday, July 11th, President McAuliffe said of Mr. Butler: “Men come and go, but there has never been no finer man than Thomas H. Butler. He was of that splendid type of manhood that all who came to know him admired and respected.’’ This fine tribute to a loyal employee of the Company expresses the sentiments of the entire staff. Mr. Butler was known and respected by all with whom he came in contact for his integrity, and it is difficult to believe that the fine friendship which existed between him and his associates has come to an end. The story of Mr. Butler’s life is an interesting one, and exemplifies the fact that, by application and hard work, one may obtain advancement in this country. He was born at Carbon, Wyoming, of immigrant parents, going to work in the mines of Carbon at an extremely early age, continuing in the employ of The Union Pacific Coal Company in many positions until he was appointed General Supervisor of Mines at all The Union Pacific Coal Company districts. No trust was ever placed in Mr. Butler that he failed to carry out in every particular. His early training and wide experience in mining fitted him for positions of responsibility which he was later to hold, as Mine Superintendent at Hanna, Superior, and Rock Springs, and in the administration of his official duties he never lost the human touch which endeared him to those he supervised. At all of the districts in which he resided he gave much of his time for the welfare of the community in which he lived. He took an active part in all community activities, and in times of sickness or trouble among the employees he was always present with his wise counsel, and, in many cases, financial help. He was a member of the Episcopalian Church and was active in all the work of the Church wherever he resided. After funeral service at his home in Ogden, his body was brought to Rock Springs, and services were conducted in the Masonic Temple, with Mr. T.S. Taliaferro, Jr., presiding. Mr. Butler was a member of the Blue Lodge of Masons, Wyoming Consistory No. 1, Cheyenne, a member of the Mystic Shrine at Rawlins, and a 33rd Degree Mason, as well as a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Odd Fellows lodge. At the conclusion of the services at Rock Springs, the body was taken to Hanna where he had resided and was Superintendent for so many years for the final services, which were conducted by the Episcopalian Church and Knights of Pythias. He was buried in the old cemetery at Carbon, Mr. Butler’s birthplace and former home. Although no one resides at Carbon today, it is truly a ghost town, but old Carbonites, when they die, are returned to the cemetery there for burial. That, we know, was Mr. Butler’s wish, that he rest in that quiet God’s acre among old friends and associates of more than fifty years. Our sincerest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Butler and his family and relatives. (UPCCEM, August 1940)
