It is hard to appreciate the lonesome appearance of this isolated colony of the dead, where the remains of Tennant were laid away. (Laramie Republican, April 9, 1908)
Note: Alex Tennant was killed in the March 28, 1908 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Plot 215 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. Alexander and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was found on Sunday March 29, 1908 on day 2 after the explosion, identified and removed from the mine. He was buried in Plot 215 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

His death was due to suffocation caused by smoke from a cigarette which he dropped on the bedding when he fell asleep. Robert Tennant was 55 years old and was born in Hanna. About a year ago he moved his family to Caldwell, Idaho. Since April he has been visiting relatives at Leo. Thursday morning, he and his wife and the two youngest children started from the ranch to return to Idaho. They had only gone a few miles when the car stalled. Mrs. Tennant went back to the ranch, and he came to Hanna for repairs to the car. That evening the tragedy which caused his death happened. Thompson, Bernard Jeff (MIR); Aka: Thompson, B. J. (MM)
Cemetery: Crow Agency in Montana
Born: 1919
Died: Mar. 14, 1963
Age: 44 y's
Note: Bernard Jeff Thompson on March 14, 1963 experienced a fatal accident which caused his death. He was age 44, married, a son seven years, and a married daughter, 20 years of age, and one grandchild. Bernard Jeff Thompson was employed by the Rosebud Coal Sales Company at the Strip Pit Operation, located near Hanna, Carbon County, Wyoming. Bernard was employed as a Shovel Operator, loading coal in the pit. At 11:55 a.m. Arnold Hilpert, Pit Foreman, came to the shovel in a pick-up truck for the purpose of taking Bernard Jeff Thompson and Darrell Barnett, his oiler, to the lunchroom for lunch. The truck Bernard was loading at the time was not quite loaded. As Arnold Hilpert stopped his pick-up, he noticed a break in the bottom. He took a second look, and this made him aware of what was taking place. He quickly climbed the wall and hollered and waved his hands to warn the other men. Bernard Jeff Thompson left his shovel and started to run as did Darrell Barnett. Mason Lane drove his truck out of the pit. Bernard Jeff Thompson was caught in the slide and covered with a large amount of rock, dirt, and coal. His body was badly crushed. Death was instant. Lyman Fearn, State Inspector of Mines, and Alex J. Pascoe, Deputy Inspector of Mines, arrived at the Pit at 5:45 p.m. on March 14, 1963. Recovery work was in progress under the direction of Milo Namtvedt, Pit Superintendent of Properties, and Jack F. Ratchye, Mining Engineer, arriving at approximately the same time the inspectors arrived. The recovery work was in progress until 11 p.m. There was considerable cracking and heaving of the spoil bank outside of the fall area. A conference was held and it was decided to wait until daylight to continue with the recovery work. This would give the area time to settle. Recovery work started at daylight on March 15, 1963. The body was recovered at 9:50 a.m. In discussing this slide with the employees and management, there was no reason that they could justify for this slide. The slide was approximately 700 feet in length, 100 feet wide and 130 feet in height. Approximately 100,000 yards of material was involved in this slide. This pit is in the area of the worked-out Underground, No. 4 Hanna Mine of the Union Pacific Coal Company. There is a possibility that the movement was caused from some disturbance in the worked-out area. The Inspectors were unable to determine the cause of this slide. (MIR)

Tynsky, Edward Joseph
Cemetery: Hanna
Born: Aug. 29, 1906
Died: Nov. 25, 1952
Age: 46 y's, 2 m's, 26 d's
Note: Edward Tynsky, Nugget mine superintendent was killed November 26, 1952 at the Nugget Coal mine. Kyman Fearn, State Mine Inspector investigated the cause of death to Edward J. Tynsky, age 46, married, no dependent children, and Mine Superintendent for the Nugget Coal Company at Hanna, Wyoming. Tynsky, died at 10:30 A.M. while being transported to the Hanna Hospital. David Freeman, Tipple Foreman, was having difficulty with the main conveyor belt from the loading bin to the tipple. This belt conveyor is 185 feet long, 2 feet 10 inches wide and raising on approximately 20% grade. Due to the extreme cold weather, the belt was slipping. On several occasions it stopped. This requires the unloading of coal before it could be started. Mr. Edward Tynsky went to the tipple and found David Freeman, Tipple Foreman, holding a stick of belt dressing on the belt, just below the belt drive at the time the belt stopped. Mr. Tynsky said to Mr. Freeman, “go and see what is the matter. Give me the belt dressing and I will do the job.” Mr. Freeman gave him the belt dressing and told him to be careful and went ahead. Not going very far, when the belt started and looked back where Mr. Tynsky was and saw that he was caught. He ran to him, caught him by the coat collar, raising him. When at this time Mr. Tynsky’s left arm fell from his body, being severed at the shoulder. Mr. Freeman called for help and rushed for a doctor. The point where Mr. Tynsky was applying belt dressing is 18 inches from the roller to the drive. The drive is 2 feet 10 inches in diameter, driven with 25 H.P. Westinghouse motor. The belt had numerous splices, anyone could have caught his arm and pulled him into the drive. The action is a violation of the State Law, Section 56 (b) Wyoming Mining Laws reading: “Machinery will not be repaired or oiled while in motion.” (MIR)
