Headstone: "June 16, 1927 - Jan. 3, 1951; OK PFC 1850 WAR DPT"
Plot: 411
Born: June 16, 1927
Died: Jan 3, 1951
Age: 23 y's, 6 m's, 17 d's
Note: Glen Dale Nixon on January 3, 1951, Glen Dale Nixon, age 23, married, was fatally injured in Room 7D E. Plane at the Hanna, No. 4A Mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company at about 10:15 p.m. Michael Duzik, Deputy Coal Mine Inspector, accompanied by mine officials of the coal company, William Roberts of the United States Bureau of Mines and William Hapgood, member of the safety committee of the Hanna Mine Workers Local Union No. 2335, investigated the accident. Glen Dale Nixon is regularly employed as a machine runner. On this particular day his occupation was a driller. The crew composed of Willian Carnaham, Joy Operator, Charles Gillespie, Jr., Joy helper, Manuel Quintana, Howard Larsen, Patrick Sanches, and W. H. Moffitt the Unit Foreman. The loading crew were loading semi-top coal and were cleaning up on the low side of the room. The drilling crew had just fired a round of shots in the top coal and were waiting for the powder smoke to clear out. The Joy operator left the controls of the Joy and walked to the controls on the low side and loaded a half a car of coal. He then reversed the machine and was in the act of backing it out when without any warning a slab of rip coal about 12 feet wide at the base and about 5 feet high at the apex and 2 feet thick in a form of a “Triangle” dropped and fell over toward the Joy striking Mr. Nixon on the head and body forcing his head against the frame of the Joy, causing injuries which were fatal. The cats on the Joy were still turning when the Joy operator ran to the nips and disconnected the power. The loading crew stated, as did the unit foreman that the apex tested and pronounced solid. Evidence of powder burn at the apex and along the slip showed that firing of the shots had loosened the coal, the crushing and squeezing at the bottom caused it to fall of its own weight. (MIR)
