Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna No. 1 Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like William Johnson - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
Note: William Johnson, African American, worked as a Shot Firer in the No. 2 mine. On Saturday, March 28, 1908 while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. William and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was not recovered from the mine. (BL)

Johnson, William Schoen (MIR) Aka: Johnson, W. S. (MM); Johnson, Bill (BL)
Cemetery: Elk Mountain, Wyoming
Born: 1945
Died: 1974
Age: 29
Note: Johnson, William S. a 29-year-old electrician fell 50 feet to his death at the Rosebud Coal Mine in Hanna while removing power poles with a hydraulic mobile crane. The extendible boom of the crane had been equipped with a fiberglass man bucket for elevating workmen for the power line work. The three-man crew had removed the wire and insulators from two poles that were to be moved in preparation for stripping. The 40 ft. poles were removed from the ground by affixing a 12 foot, 3/8 in. chain just below the crossarm and hoisting with the crane. The first pole was removed with no incident. The victim was in the bucket after securing the chain to the second pole. After the pole had moved about 2 feet out of the ground, a chain link broke allowing a sudden release of tension which caused the end of the boom to spring forward. This springboard effect flipped the victim into the air above the bucket from whence he fell to the ground. Safety belts were not being used by men when working in the bucket. (MIR)
Note: William Johnson was killed at the Rosebud mine on December 26, 1974 in Hanna. He was buried in Elk Mountain, Wyoming. (BL)

Some timbers were accidentally knocked out of their place, which let a mass of rocks and dirt fall on the boy, crushing the life out of him and killing the mule which he was driving. Young Jones was quite popular among the miners. (Rawlins Republican, Jan. 12, 1893)
