Note: Death of Mrs. Elvera Olofson Walgren by T. H. Butler. The many friends of Mrs. Elvera Marie Olofson Walgen were grieved to learn of her death, at her ranch home on Troublesome Creek, on April 14th. Mrs. Walgren had visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs Olof Olofson, for several days and apparently was in good health when she left Hanna for her home with her husband. Shortly after reaching home, she was taken ill and passed away within a few hours. Mrs. Walgren was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olof Olofson, old timers of Hanna and was born in Hanna on September 10th, 1900. After graduating from the school at Hanna, she became the wife of Carl Oscar Walgren on April 14th, 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Walgren made their home in Hanna until there years ago, when they took up their abode on their ranch on Troublesome Creek. Funeral services were held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on April 19th, Mr. S. L. Morgan officiating and interment being made in the Hanna Cemetery. Mrs. Walgren was much beloved in the community. Her cheerful and sunny disposition endeared her to all who knew her. The obsequies were largely attended by her many friends from Hanna and the ranch county adjacent, and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. Mrs. Walgren leaves to mourn her untimely passing, her husband, Carl Oscar Walgren: one son Daniel Edward; her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Olof Olofson; three sisters, Mrs. Olive Walgren and Edna and Nellie Olofson, all of Hanna, as well as numerous other relatives and friends, all of whom have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. Westerlund, Gust (Inquest); Aka: Westerland, Gus (MIR); Westerland, G. (MM)
Cemetery: Hanna
Born: 1847
Died: June 30, 1903
Age: 56 y's
Note: Gust Westerlund, a Finnish miner, metal mine identification check number #11, married, was killed in the June 30, 1903 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was found at entry 16, identified and removed from the mine on July 17, 1903, on day 18 after the explosion. He was buried in one of the many unmarked graves in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)
Note: Hanna, Wyo., July 18 - Entry No. 16 was opened yesterday and the relief workers are just beginning to realize the horror of their task. A trip of loaded and empty cars was found scattered about. Many of the cars were nothing more than broken masses of wood and twisted iron, while all had received the full force of the explosion and were damaged more or less. Scattered among the broken cars were the carcasses of the mules, their bodies mangled and harness broken and portions blown away. The tools of the men were twisted and broken and scattered. In room No. 1 of entry 16 the body of Rudolph Sella [Salo], the fifth to be recovered was found. The remains were burned in a terrible manner and were only recognized after the most careful search for gold filled teeth and other markings. As soon as the bodies were brought to the surface they were prepared for immediate burial. At the face of room No. 1 the remains of Gust Westerlund were found, and as in the case of Rudolf Sella [Salo], it was almost impossible to recognize in the blackened face of the victim the well know features of Westerlund. John While, 68, was reported missing by his family Tuesday after he did not come home from a fishing trip Christmas night, authorities said. Searchers found his body Thursday after someone reported seeing his silver Toyota near a road 4.2 miles north of Hanna. While probably became disoriented by fog when he left the car Monday or Tuesday, authorities said. The body was discovered 1 3/4 miles from the car in a draw, near an abandoned mine. Below-zero wind chills were reported at about the time While became stranded, Carbon County Sheriff Jerry Colson said. “There’s no evidence of foul play, “he said. “His wallet and his papers were intact.
