Maki, Gustav (MIR) Aka: Maki, G. (MM)
Cemetery: Hanna
Born: 1852
Died: 1892
Died: 1893 in Hanna (MM)
Age: 40 y's
Note: Gustav Maki, Finlander, was killed by a fall of coal, in the No. 1 mine, on Wednesday; funeral from the Finn Hall on Friday with 250 miners attending. (Laramie Boomerang, May 12, 1892) (BL)
Note: Gustav Maki, Finlander, miner, age 40, was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company’s No. 1 Mine in Hanna. He had drilled and fired a blast in the bottom bench about twelve feet from the upper end of a pillar which he and another miner were to bring back. After the smoke had cleared away, Maki started to work out the coal loosened by the blast, before finding whether or not the coal above was safe. While in the act of digging the loose coal, a mass of the coal fell from the side above him, causing injuries to him from which he afterwards died. (1891 - 92 MIR)
Note: Coroner’s Inquest: An inquisition held in Hanna, in the County of Carbon, on the 28th day of April A.D. 1892 before me, A.F. Those, Coroner of said county, upon the body of Gustav Maki, lying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereto subscribed, the said jurors upon their oaths do say: deceased came to his death on April the 27th, 1892 about 12:15P.M. while working in room No. 8, Entry No. 3 of Mine No. 1 at Hanna, Wyoming by a piece of coal about one ton in weight falling upon him, crushing his skull. We further find that his death was accidental and caused by his own carelessness in not examining the coal above, which he was working, after having fired a blast. (1891-92 MIR)
Note: Gustav was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company’s Hanna No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was buried in the Hanna cemetery. His headstone was not found. (BL)

Maki, Herman William (Headstone); Maki, Herman W. (MIR); Aka: Maki, H. (MM)
Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: “1892 - 1941; HAAPAMAKI”
Plot: 377
Born: July 7, 1892
Died: Dec. 19, 1941
Age: 49 y's, 5 m's, 12 d's
Note: Fatal Accident involving Herman W. Maki. On December 19, 1941, Herman W. Maki, Finnish, age 49, married, one dependent, was killed instantly at 10:30 A.M. in No. 8 Room, J-1 Plane of the Hanna No. 4 Mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company. Maki, who was employed as a driller, had stamped a place preparatory to drilling a hole on the lower left-hand rib; he was working under what is known as the top coal pepper. His partner, William Bennett, was above him standing on a pile of coal that had been previously shot down. While Bennett was on this coal, he noticed the upper layer moving and small pieces dropping. He immediately called to Maki to look out or get out. Maki either failed to understand the warning or felt that nothing of any consequence could fall. Instead of moving back, he looked up at the same instant the coal fell, which struck him on the chest, breaking his back, legs, and possibly his neck. The doctor stated that either the neck or the back injuries would have killed him. Maki was recognized by his employers as being a first-class miner, a conscientious, capable, and careful workman. There is no gain saying that he failed to heed the warning called to him by his partner which resulted in his death. That he had violated no state or company rules in carrying out the foreman’s instructions is another factor that must not be overlooked. This Department will appreciate someone in the supervisory department examining get escaping of all faces, sides and top after each blast and remain to see that each place has been made secure, thereby guarding against a recurrence of the above. J.M. Sampson, State Coal Mine Inspector. Robert T. Real, Deputy Coal Mine Inspector. (MIR)
Note: Herman Maki was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company’s No. 4 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Plot 377 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)
Note: The community was shocked and saddened by the death of Herman William Maki, driller in No. 4 Mine, Hanna, on December 19th, a member of the Old Timers’ Association. Herman Maki was born in Vaasa, Finland, on July 7,1892. He came to Hanna in 1917 and had worked there since. He was well known and respected by everyone. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and one daughter. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church at Hanna on December 21st, with Rev. R. Palmer officiating, and interment in the Hanna Cemetery. (UPCCEM, February 1942)

Note: John Mazane, Greek, age 44, married, two dependent children. Findings of the investigation into the accident which occurred in the No. 2 Mine, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, in which Samuel Crawshaw and John Mazane were killed by a fall of coal. The accident occurred at the first right hand crosscut below 13th Entry, where Samuel Crawshaw and John Mazane had been employed in taking down top coal. This place had that morning been examined at different times by the fire boss, mine foreman and assistant foreman, the last visit being made by the assistant foreman at 11:15 A.M. and all three men reported the place as being in first class condition at the time of their respective examinations. While the assistant foreman was in the place, Crawshaw asked him to send the shot-firer down as he had two shots ready to fire; this the assistant foreman did and Shot-firer Erickson went down and fired the shots at about 11:30. After shooting he made the customary examination of the place and called Crawshaw’s attention to the high side of the lip of top coal, telling him that it did not look too good. Crawshaw replied that he would try to take it down or else shoot it down. At about 12:30 P.M. the rope rider went down to change cars for Crawshaw and Mazane, but they were not yet loaded so he went on with his routine work. At 1:15 he returned to their place to change the cars, which this time he found to be loaded, but on seeing no lights he shouted to the men and on receiving no reply went into the place and found a fall of top coal. Suspecting that both men were buried he went in search of help and also notified the foreman. When the bodies were found under the top coal the position of them would lead to the belief (they were close together) that the men were walking under the coal so as to get the inside of the lip and probably try to take it down (they had a pick and a pinch bar with them) and the coal fell and caught them both while they were under it. (MIR)
Note: On February 18th, at 2:00 P. M., the stately services of the Greek Orthodox Church were conducted at the funeral of John Mazane at his late home in Hanna, internment was made in the local cemetery. The funeral was attended by the members of the United Workmen of America, with a large concourse of relatives and friends. The burial services of the United Mine Workers of America were read at the grave by John G. Kelby, President of Local Union No. 2335, and the remains laid to rest amid many beautiful floral offerings. The decedent was born at Poulos, Crete, Greece, in August 1885, coming to America in August 1912, when he entered the employ of the Union Pacific Coal Company. He leaves to mourn his loss, a widow and two young daughters, Kiriakin, aged six years, and Elene, aged three years; his father and mother, and two brothers living in Greece; and on brother at Zeigler, Illinois. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family and relatives in their loss. (UPCCEM, April 1929)

In a ceremony at the ROTC offices at the Half Acre gym in Laramie, Col. W. Thomas Reeder, professor of military science at UW, presented the medals to McAtee’s parents. One of the decorations was the Silver Star, third highest award for valor in the nation. The citation read: “For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, Specialist Four McAtee distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving as a team leader with Company D, 2nd Battalion, (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry during a reconnaissance in force mission near Quan Loi. “When his unit became heavily engaged with a numerically superior enemy force and the machine gunner was seriously wounded, Spec. 4 McAtee exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved to the machine gun and placed accurate suppressive fire on the advancing enemy. “After the enemy’s attack had been halted, Spec. 4 McAtee began to administer first aid and evaluate the wounded personnel. Although injured himself, he continued to aid the casualties and distributed ammunition until he was mortally wounded. “Spec. 4 McAtee’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.” Other decorations awarded to McAtee were the Bronze Star, The Air Medal for at least 25 missions involving aircraft--probably helicopters in this case; the Purple Heart for wounds received; the Good Conduct Medal; the National Defense Medal for serving in the armed forces; Vietnamese Service Medal for duty in Vietnam; Vietnamese Campaign Medal given by the government of Vietnam; and Auto-Rifle Badge for scoring sharpshooter.

McCartney, age 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep from Covid-19 on November 13, 2020, at the Casper Mountain Rehabilitation and Care Center in Casper, Wyoming, with his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Ken Shurter, by his side. He was born, James Harvey McCartney, September 25, 1938, to Glenn and Virginia (Farmer) McCartney in Lewistown, MT. Jim attended schools in Wheatland, Laramie, Elk Mountain, Saratoga and Hanna. He joined the United States Army in 1956 and was given an honorable discharge in 1957 as his service was not needed at that time. On November 9, 1957, Jim married Joyce Elaine While, at the Episcopal Church in Hanna and they began their life together. They had three children, James, Rick and Deborah Kim and were involved in their sporting events and activities. Jim started working as a young man hauling logs to the lumber mill even before he was old enough to get a driver's license. He was a service and parts manager for several car dealerships in Rawlins and Casper, WY as well as Grand Junction and Alamosa, CO. With Joyce by his side, he worked for different ranches by Rawlins and Douglas WY. Jim worked as a dragline operator for many years at Rosebud Coal Sales in Hanna. Jim had a heart transplant on September 13, 2001, at University Hospital in Denver CO. He was a 19-year survivor. After he was able to return to the workforce, he became the maintenance man for the Hanna Housing where he worked until his retirement in June of 2017. He got to go fishing in the ocean and had a wonderful time. Jim was involved in community causes like the Lion’s Club and Jaycees, Hanna Recreation Center and for years was the Hanna Cemetery Board president. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family hunting and camping, riding horses and ranching, and visiting with friends and relatives. He loved to watch his grandchildren in sporting events, dance recitals, drama plays, gymkhanas, ranch rodeos, and all other horseback riding and roping events. Jim was preceded in death by his mother and father of Wellington, Colorado, wife, Joyce, of 59 1/2 years, brother, Don, and sister, Alice, and many close friends and family members. Miller, Dale Leroy (MIR); Aka: Miller, D.L. (MM)
Cemetery: Rawlins, Wyoming
Born: 1945
Died: Nov. 28, 1969
Age: 24 y's
Note: Dale Miller was killed at the Rosebud mine in Hanna. He was buried in Rawlins, Wyoming. (BL)
Note: On Nov. 28, 1969, at approximately 6 p.m., Dale L. Miller, age 24, married and the father of two minor children, was involved in a fatal accident at the coal mine operated by the Rosebud Coal Sales Company. There were no witnesses to this accident. The accident was investigated by Cliff Artis, General Superintendent, Leo O’Brian, Superintendent, Frank Shurter, Night Foreman, Charles Rose, District Safety Supervisor, all from Rosebud Coal Sales Company, Charles Beasley, Business Agent for the Operating Engineers Local Union, Eugene C. Iverson and James Mecca, Wyoming Mine Inspection Department. Mr. Miller was employed as a night oiler. He came on shift at 3:30 p.m. and worked with Kenny McKenzie, day oiler, servicing the mobile equipment used in the stripping and hauling operation. Mr. McKenzie was due to go off shift at 7 p.m. McKenzie and Miller had been working together during these hours for about one week. They were in the process of servicing the Euclid, 53-ton, bottom dump trucks, which were hauling the coal from the strip pit to the tipple dump. Miller had been employed as an oiler on this job for almost three months. In 1967-68 he had worked ten months for Rosebud Coal Sales Company as a car dropper and as an oiler. At approximately 6 p.m., Miller took his flashlight and went to the area where he could flag one of the haulage trucks as it came off the dumping ramp to send it to the vehicle servicing area, approximately one hundred and ten yards away from the dump. The oiler flagging the trucks normally took a station about sixty yards from the servicing area. This was the last time Mr. Miller was seen alive. At 6 p.m. on Nov. 28, 1969 it was quite dark. The yard lights were on, but it was dark in the area of the tipple dump. It was reported that Mr. Miller’s flashlight was burning brightly previous to his disappearance. After Kenny McKenzie had seen two trucks pass over the dumping area and then circle around to go back to the pit he began to wonder what had happened to Miller. He flagged down the third truck and asked the driver if he had seen Miller. When the driver reported that he had not, McKenzie notified Frank Shurter, Night Foreman, that he could not find Miller. Shurter notified Leo O’Brian, Superintendent, who carefully searched the area between the tipple dump and the vehicle servicing area. In the meantime, Ray Schisel, who was loading railroad cars from the conveyor boom, saw a battered flashlight drop from the loading boom into the car. He recovered the flashlight and notified the tipple operator of his find. This was about 6:13 p.m. The tipple operator notified Shurter when he came into the tipple looking for Miller. The machinery in the tipple was shut down at approximately 6:45 p.m. and a search was made for Miller. His body was found in a head down position in one of the sampling chutes near the end of the tipple circuit. Mr. Miller’s body was badly mangled. One leg was severed and missing. It is assumed Mr. Miller stumbled or fell into the receiving hopper at the tipple dump. He then passed over the reciprocating feeder into the 30’x 72’ Double Roll Breaker, through that onto the primary conveyor belt, over the shaking screens, across the lump picking table, over a cross conveyor belt onto the flight conveyor. His body must have been draped over one of the cross flights as it passed over the secondary crusher. He then went off the end of the flight conveyor, his body hitting the wall of the building. It is at this point where his missing leg was found. His body was then dragged up to the head end of the flight conveyor and he passed headfirst into a sampling chute where his body was found. (MIR)

Miller, Merl (MIR) Aka: Miller, M. (MM)
Cemetery: Laramie, Wyoming
Born: Unknown
Died: Feb. 24, 1934
Age: Unknown
Note: February 24, 1934 - Merl Miller. Findings of the accident that occurred in the Miller Underground Mine, located about 15 miles northwest of Medicine Bow in Carbon County, wherein Merl Miller was killed. This accident was not reported to this Department and nothing was known of it until a news item in the Wyoming Tribune was seen on February 28th. Upon arriving at the mine it was discovered that there was no one present, it being surmised that the family was in Laramie attending the funeral rites of the deceased. From the information received and from observation, it appears that Mr. Miller had been employed in undermining the face of the main entry when a piece of coal, weighing approximately one-half to three quarters of a ton, fell from the face and crushed Mr. Miller’s head and shoulders to such extent that death was practically instantaneous. This was later verified by D.V. Miller, a son of the deceased. Mr. Miller and two sons had operated this property by themselves for about three years and on all previous visits, the last one only two weeks before the date of the accident, conditions were found to be good and all safety precautions taken. Mr. Miller was a good, practical miner. (MIR)
Note: Merl Miller was killed in the Miller underground mine north of Hanna near Carbon. He was buried in Laramie, Wyoming. (BL)

Note: Obituary: Earl Dee “Bud” Milliken. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, 12:15 am. Memorial Services for Earl Dee “Bud” Milliken, 82, will be held in the Encampment School gymnasium at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. He died Feb. 28 in Laramie. Loren “Teense” Willford will conduct the Masonic Service. His students called him Mr. Milliken, or more often Coach. He was a man who was not only highly respected, but who also taught respect. He was a disciplinarian to his three daughters, Becky, Marcy, and Lisa, and to the young men and women who sat in his social studies classroom, were in his physical education classes, or took part in the sports teams he coached. Mr. Milliken was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Hanna, the son of William and Rachel Milliken. He was the youngest of eight children and attended school in Hanna where he was graduated in 1949. Out of high school, he went to work for the Union Pacific coal mines in Hanna. He was then called to serve his country with the Army in Korea, where he fought on the front lines in the trenches, earning a purple heart when he was wounded with shrapnel in his leg, and losing much of his hearing from the explosion of grenades. Returning to Hanna, he married his sweetheart, Morna Dodson, on September 4, 1954, and entered the University of Wyoming on the GI Bill. He became a trainer for the UW athletic teams and had an offer to stay with the Cowboys after college. After earning his degree in history and physical education from the University of Wyoming in 1958 he found a teaching and coaching job in Rock River. He spent 13 years teaching and coaching in Rock River, winning a share of regional basketball titles, taking his Longhorns to state, and also coaching cross country and track teams. A position teaching social studies and physical education, and coaching opened in Encampment, and Mr. Milliken was offered the job. Ole Jim York called him, told him to come to Encampment, that he had a house for the family to live in, and that sealed the deal. The first Tiger basketball game he coached was against the Saratoga Panthers. He knew the intense rivalry between those two valley schools so before the game he told Morna to have the car gassed up and ready to go. If the Tigers lost he figured they would need a quick way to get out of town. But Encampment won that contest. Coach Milliken wasn’t one to stop with a single win, and he took the Tigers to a Regional Championship and played for the State Championship his first year at EHS. Coach Milliken spent 20 years at EHS teaching social studies, physical education, coaching track and basketball, and serving as activities director. He inspired young athletes who became coaches themselves, and he inspired students in his classes who became teachers and principals, historians, engineers, soldiers, and many other professions. He amassed a basketball coaching record of 252 wins, 147 losses, six regional championships, and three state championship runners-up. He also coached a state championship runner-up team in cross country and won three regional track championships. He served as a representative on the Wyoming Coaches Association and in 1985 he was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hanna, Masonic Lodge #50 of Hanna, where he became a Master Mason on Sept. 2, 1965, VFW Post 6125 in Encampment, The Cowboy Joe Club, and a Lifetime member of the Wyoming Coaches Association. He retired from teaching in 1992 and moved to Hanna, retaining close ties with the Encampment community, often attending basketball games to support the Tigers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Morna, an infant son, Stanley, his mother-in-law, Goldie Sherman, his parents, and six siblings. He is survived by his three daughters, Becky Hertzog of Craig, CO., Marcy Cooley of Saratoga, and Lisa Dilley (Michael) of Sinclair; his sister, Joyce Dody (Ken) of Fort Collins; seven grandchildren, Robyn Kitchen (Scott) and Rachel Lowe (Josh) of Craig, Evan Hertzog of Denver; Chad Cooley (Jolene) of Wright, Angie Cooley of Saratoga, Jacob Fluty of Saratoga, and Wyatt Fluty of Powell, plus great-grandchildren Thayne, Corey Liz, and Kierlyn Kitchen and Quincy, Camille, and Avenly Lowe all of Craig, Co., Payton, Harley, and Reagan Cooley of Wright, and Kadince Fluty of Saratoga. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials to the E-Club in Encampment or to the Cowboy Joe Club. (Rawlins Daily Times, Feb 2013)

In the early 1930’s Rob joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.) and later peddled milk and eggs for his Uncle Swat and Ann Milliken, hauled coal with his Uncle John Milliken Jr., clerked at the Union Pacific Coal Company Store and then was employed by the Monolith Coal mine in 1940 until his retirement in 1968. That same year (1940) he married Gertrude Salo. Rob was a good and decent man, a very likable person, who cared and loved all his family, wife, 2 sons, 1 granddaughter, 3 grandsons and 1 great grandson. His love for music started first, by playing in the Hanna Community Band. He became a drummer for the Red Devil Orchestra and later played with Mark Jackson's Dance Band which played at the Garden Spot Pavilion in Elk Mountain during the summer season. The rest of the seasons, the band traveled all around the state playing for dances. He turned out to be one of the better drummers in the state. He was an all-around sports fan, following the Wyoming Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Boston Red Sox and Boxing. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Local 7404, District 22, Hanna Lodge #50 of A.F. and A.M., American Association of Retired Persons, Cowboy Joe Club, Hanna Recreation Center and the Hanna Seniors Club. The last 23 years of his life he spent fighting for his life, but finally losing his battle to heart and lung problems while vacationing in Farmington, New Mexico. I remember reading a 1928 issue of the Hanna High School newspaper, The Pioneer, which featured the graduates. Under each picture there was a small caption and under Rob's it read:
SMILING BOBBY RUNNING HIS HOBBY
Rob ran to your side during periods of happiness.
He ran to your side during periods of sadness.
When you needed help Rob ran to your side to give help.
Rob ran the final distance on February 20, 1986.

Note: John Milliken of Hanna Passes Away - One of Carbon County’s oldest pioneer residents passed away at his home in Hanna on Wednesday, March 18th. John Milliken was a real pioneer and reached the age of 88 years at the time of his death. Like many of the pioneers who settled in the United States, Mr. Milliken came from the land of the Shamrock, being born at County Down, Ireland, February 23, 1854, his parents William and Mary Milliken. He came to the United States in the fall of 1874, settling in Carbon, which was a frontier coal-mining town. Having learned to mine coal in his native country, he obtained employment in the Carbon mines, working there for six years. Subsequently he developed several business enterprises, staying there until the abandonment of the coal-mining operations in 1902. Like all early residents of Carbon, he was deeply attached to it, and liked to reminisce with the friends who lived there. After leaving Carbon, Mr. Milliken and his family came to Hanna, where he carried on a transfer, livery, and automobile business; he also engaged in ranching and horse raising in the vicinity of Hanna. On January 19, 1881, Mr. Milliken was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Sutton, who had moved from Illinois to Carbon. Mr. Milliken is survived by his widow, Mrs. Milliken; three sons, John, Jr., W.S., and Robert S. Milliken, all of Hanna; and five daughters, Mrs. Thomas Hudson, Hanna, Mrs. Henry Cheesbrough, Elk Mountain, Mrs. H.H. Challender, Cheyenne, Mrs. Margaret Hill, Paris, Idaho, and Mrs. Oscar Peterson, Reno, Nevada, and to them our sympathy is extended. Mr. Milliken was a kindly gentleman, and had innumerable friends in Carbon County, who will regret his passing. (UPCCEM, May 1942)

He was employed as a laborer on the 5 B U Joy Loading machine and was working in the No. 5 Room on “E” Plane. At the time of the accident the Joy machine was not in operation. Two men with Mr. Morris were standing alongside the machine, Mr. Morris being on the inside, when the trimmer, Walter Rokla, warned them to look out. They started to run, but the coal that fell from the high rib caught Heber Morris causing injuries from which he died in the Hanna hospital a few hours later. (MIR)
Note: Death of Mr. Heber Morris - It is with sincere regret that we must record the passing of Heber Morris, who departed this life on Wednesday, May 9th, at 11:05 p.m., at the Hanna Hospital. Mr. Morris was employed in No. 4 Mine and at 3:15 p.m., on above date, was fatally injured by a fall of coal, which resulted in his death seven hours later. He was born at Almy, Wyoming, on February 22, 1884, and began work in the mines at that place when quite young. He entered the service of The Union Pacific Coal Company at Spring Valley in the year 1902, and came to Hanna in July 1918. Funeral services were held at his home, on Saturday, May 12th, Elders Hasting D. Matsen and Harold W. Barnes of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints, and the Rev. Francis Bacon, of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, conducting. Interment was made in the Hanna Cemetery, with members of the U.M.W. of A., Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Knights of Pythias, as well as the relatives and many other friends attending the obsequies. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Mr. Morris leaves to mourn his departure his widow; one son, Heber Mathew; a stepdaughter, Jeanie; his mother, Mrs. Ann Morris; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Brown and Mrs. Herman Barnes; two brothers, John and Thomas Morris, all of Evanston, Wyoming; and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Turner of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. John Hudson, Hanna, who were present at the last sad rites with the exception of Mrs. Thomas Turner.
