THEIR TRAGEDY
This thing really has hit the men who are too young for pensions, but too old to land jobs elsewhere. The tragedy is theirs.
Thomas Mellor and his wife are "Ma" and "Pa" to practically everyone in town. They raised four youngsters of his, four of hers by a previous marriage - she was widowed by the 1908 explosion - and held open house in their little home for years for all the kids in town.

For 45 years, he's been treasurer of the union, Local 2335 of the UMW. Now, he's on a pension. "The union tried to keep the mines open by building up the coal business, but the company said they couldn't do it," he said. "Sure, coal will come back some day - but it will be a long time. "Hanna has the best coal in the U.P. system. It was named, you know, for Mark.A. Hanna, who said there was enough coal here to last a century. There's more than that, but it's doing no good to anyone now. "We've tried to keep our union alive, and we still have 200 members on the rolls. But many of them have moved."  (Rocky Mountain News, Dec. 9, 1954)
