Caleb, Loid (MIR) (MM)
Cemetery: Encampment, Wyoming
Born: 1963
Died: Sept. 11, 1996
Age: 33 y's
Note: Loid Caleb, died on September 11, 1996 at 12:04 a.m. Mr. Caleb was fatally injured at the Cyprus Shoshone Coal Mine, Shoshone Number One Mine. Mr. Caleb and three other miners were working under the shields, along the long wall pauline. They were installing mesh above the shields in preparation for long wall equipment removal. Without warning, a large piece of coal weighing several tons pivoted around the tips of the shields and cantilevered out into the pauline area, striking the victim and killing him instantly. None of the other miners were seriously injured. Caleb had over 7 years of experience as a long wall miner. At the time of the accident, he was working with Alan Vaughn, Ed Buckendorf and Jim Welsh. Vaughn, Buckendorf, and Welch all saw the coal begin to fall and ran. Caleb was totally covered by the solid piece of coal, which measured 3 feet thick by 5 feet wide by 8 feet long. Alan Vaughn's lower left leg was pinned between the piece of top coal and the spill plate, and Ed Buckendorf's back was scratched by the handheld roof drill as it fell. (MIR)
Note: Loid was killed at the Cyprus Shoshone No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Encampment, Wyoming. (BL)

Headstone: "Nov. 6, 1906 - Jan. 26, 1928"
Plot: 133
Born: Nov. 6, 1906
Died: Jan. 26, 1928
Age: 21 y's, 2 m's, 20 d's
Note: The sudden and unexpected passing of Emily Brunton Campbell cast a gloom of sorrow over the entire community of Hanna. Emily entered the Hanna Hospital on January 10th and submitted to an operation for appendicitis which was considered successful, and while she did not progress as satisfactorily as was hoped, her complete recovery was looked for. Leaving the hospital, she was taken to her home, where it was thought she would be more contented, and thereby her complete recovery hastened, but death came on January 26, at 6:30 P. M. Emily, or "Sis" as we familiarly called her, was born in Scotland, November 6, 1906, and came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell the year 1920, locating with her parents in Hanna, where she attended the public school, graduating from the High School. After graduating she accepted the position of Assistant Bookkeeper in the U. P. Coal Company Store, where, by her kindly and courteous manner and loyal and efficient service, she endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church on Sunday, January 29th, the Rev. J. M. Johnson officiating. Interment was made in the Hanna Cemetery, and the esteem in which she was held was evidenced by the many floral offerings and the large concourse of relatives and friends that attended the remains to their last resting place. The deceased leaves to mourn her loss, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Jones and Lena Campbell; and one brother, James Campbell, all of Hanna. The entire community extends its heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing parents and relative in this their sad affliction. (UPCCEM, March 1928)

Carnahan, William A.
Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "July 24, 1881 - May 23, 1940; Father"
Plot: 128
Born: July 24, 1881
Died: May 23, 1940
Age: 58 y's, 9 m's, 29 d's
Note: William Carnahan was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 4 mine in Hanna. He was buried in the Hanna cemetery in Plot 128. (BL)
Note: Fatal Accident Involving William A. Carnahan. On May 23, 1940, William A. Carnahan, car coupler, age 59, married, two dependents, was fatally injured when squeezed between an empty and loaded car. The accident occurred at 9:40 A. M. He died in the Hanna Miners' Hospital at 11:47 A. M. the same day. The accident took place at the north end of the 2nd north parting, north slope of the Hanna No. 4 mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company. Carnahan's duties consisted of making up motor trips, to see that they were properly coupled to eliminate any unnecessary delay on the parting and to clean track while waiting for rope trips or haulage motor. According to the testimony, also the investigation, there were twelve loaded cars on the parting, all coupled. Two four-car trips were then landed and coupled together by Carnahan. However, he failed to couple the last eight cars to the twelve that were already standing on the parting. There being no eyewitness to the accident, Bruce Bailey, motorman and Frank Worsley, fire boss, testified that when Bruce landed his empty trip and started to pull out, Carnahan was riding the end of the loaded trip. When he noticed that eight cars were not coupled, he flagged the motorman with the red light. Bruce at the same time knew his trip was light, turned and saw Carnahan flagging him to come back so he could couple the eight cars that were left. Carnahan walked up the wide side to the end of the trip and then crossed over in front of the loaded eight-car trip, and stood in readiness to couple the trip together, evidently forgetting about the standing empties. The motorman stated that he saw Mr. Carnahan waiting to couple the trips up when he heard him yell. Mr. Worsley, fire boss, was at the parting at the time and called to the motorman to pull the trip back, stating that he thought Carnahan was caught between the two trips. This was done and he ran towards Carnahan, whom he found lying between the tracks. Had Mr. Carnahan remained on the wide side as was customary in coupling the trips together, this accident would have been avoided. Recommendations: To prevent like recurrences of this nature, instructions should be given to all haulage men to see that their trips are in the clear before disengaging their motor from their empty trips or coupling their motor to the loaded trip. J.M. Sampson State Coal Mine Inspector and Robert T. Real, Deputy Coal Mine Inspector. (MIR)
Note: William. A. Carnahan, Inside Laborer, Loader, etc., Mine No. 4, Hanna, died there on May 23rd as a result of injuries received. (MIR)

Note: Death from Botulism Claims Four Children at Hanna: The community of Hanna was shocked and grieved at the sad news of the death of the four children of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Collins, which occurred on Sunday, November 22nd, from Botulism, caused by eating canned deviled ham. The four children and the father partook of a lunch of deviled ham sandwiches about 1:00 P. M. on Saturday, November 21st, with apparently no ill effects until about 1:00 o'clock Sunday morning, November 22nd, when the children complained of feeling ill. Doctors were immediately summoned who did everything in their power, but without avail. Mary, age 15 years, Johnnie, aged 9 years and Anna, aged two and one-half years, passed away with in a few minutes time; Willie, aged 13 years, was taken to the Hanna Hospital, and everything that was possible was done for him but he, too, passed away at 2:30 P. M. on Sunday, November 22nd. Dr. Jeffrey and Coroner Pickett were summoned from Rawlins, and Dr. Anderson, State Health Officer, was summoned from Cheyenne and an autopsy was held, the cause of death being determined as Botulism. Mr. and Mrs. Collins have made their home here since their marriage, and the departed children, their entire family, were born and reared here, and the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief-stricken parents in their sorrow. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 25th, at 10:00 A. M., Rev. Father McDonald officiating, and interment was made in the Hanna Cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings were in evidence, and the love and esteem in which the Parents and departed children were held was evidenced by the large concourse of friends that attended the ceremonies. Mr. Cook married before leaving his native country, coming to the United States in 1880, locating in Franklin, Idaho, where he remained for a brief period. Thereafter he worked in the mines at Rock Springs, thence removing to work in a mine at Chestnut, Montana, where his wife passed away, leaving him with three young children. Sometime thereafter, Mr. Cook left Montana, locating first at Carbon, from there moving to Almy, where he married Martha Bennett Wilkes of Almy. Crank, Stanley (MIR); Aka: Crank, S. (MM)
Cemetery: Greenhill Cemetery Laramie, Wyoming
Born: 1910
Died: Oct. 17, 1941
Age: 30 y's
Note: Fatal Accident Involving Stanley Crank. On October 17, 1941, at 12:45 P.M. Stanley Crank, Joy operator, age 31, American, married and one dependent, was instantly killed by a fall of rib coal in No. 9 Room, J Plane, Hanna No. 4 Mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company. Stanley and his partner Joseph Lucas, trimmer, Eino Williams, Joy helper, and Max Whitman, motorman, were loading coal from the high side of the room when the accident occurred. According to the statements made at the investigation, also the testimony brought out at the inquest, Joseph Lucas, whose work consists of trimming down all loose coal, had just come down from the coal pile and was talking to Stanley about the condition of the high side rib. Stanley stated to Mr. Lucas that the high side appeared to be in good shape and was not working, as it had been all morning. They loaded two cars and started on the third when the coal fell, crushing him against the Joy. The coal that fell measured ten feet by two feet by three feet thick. The room at this point was thirty-two feet wide and twenty-six feet high. The slips run diagonally across the room. The piece that fell from this slip came down without giving any or little warning Nevertheless, the overhang at this particular point was excessive as compared with the general mining condition in this seam. Had the rib been leaning toward the top instead of overhanging toward the workmen, this accident may have been avoided. Recommendation: This Department recommends that all overhanging rib or top coal be taken down before any loading takes place. Where brushing cannot be fully carried out, props in the form of a brace can be set until such time as the dangerous condition can be removed by shooting down excessive overhang. Robert T. Real, Deputy Coal Mine Inspector. (MIR)
Note: Stanley Crank - American, age 30, married, Joy operator, Section 2, Hanna No. 4 Mine. FATAL. The working place was a top-coal room in which approximately twenty feet of coal remained at the face of the room to be loaded. The room is driven on the strike, the seam pitching about seventeen degrees, but the coal is cut so that the bottom is level. The high-side rib tends to overhang but an effort is made to trim this as vertical as possible. About seven feet up from the bottom is a small rock band that is known as the top of the seven-foot seam, some slips cutting across the room being noticeable in the coal. The Joy had been loading on the low side of the room and was moved so that it angled about forty-five degrees toward the high rib, the operator being about ten feet from the high rib. The motor had brought in a trip of cars and two were loaded, and while the third car was being loaded a piece of coal, ten feet long, four feet wide and three feet thick, broke from the high rib off the top of the seven-foot seam, the end of it catching Stanley and causing instant death. (UPCCEM, December 1941)

Robert T. Note: Samuel Crawshaw, English, age 42, married, with two dependent children. Findings of investigation into the accident which occurred in the No. 2 Mine, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, in which Samuel Crawshaw and John Mazane were killed by a fall of coal. The accident occurred at the first right hand crosscut below 13th Entry, where Samuel Crawshaw and John Mazane had been employed in taking down top coal. This place had that morning been examined at different times by the fire boss, mine foreman and assistant foreman, the last visit being made by the assistant foreman at 11:15 A.M. and all three men reported the place as being in first class condition at the time of their respective examinations. While the assistant foreman was in the place, Crawshaw asked him to send the shot-firer down as he had two shots ready to fire; this the assistant foreman did and Shot-firer Erickson went down and fired the shots at about 11:30. After shooting he made the customary examination of the place and called Crawshaw's attention to the high side of the lip of top coal, telling him that it did not look too good. Crawshaw replied that he would try to take it down or else shoot it down. At about 12:30 P.M. the rope rider went down to change cars for Crawshaw and Mazane, but they were not yet loaded so he went on with his routine work. At 1:15 he returned to their place to change the cars, which this time he found to be loaded, but on seeing no lights he shouted to the men and on receiving no reply went into the place and found a fall of top coal. Suspecting that both men were buried he went in search of help and notified the foreman. When the bodies were found under the top coal the position of them would lead to the belief (they were close together) that the men were walking under the coal so as to get the inside of the lip and probably try to take it down (they had a pick and a pinch bar with them) and the coal fell and caught them both while they were under it. (MIR)
Note: Hanna Mourns the Date of Samuel Crawshaw by T. H. Butler: On February 14th, 1929, the Angel of Death again visited our little community and removed from our midst two of our much loved and respected citizens and fellow workers. The appalling accident in No. 2 Mine on the above date which claimed the lives of Samuel Crawshaw and John Mazame, cast a gloom over the entire community, and again brought to our attention the uncertainty of life. On February 18th, at 9:45 A. M., the mortal remains of Samuel Crawshaw were taken from is home to Saint Marks Episcopal Church, preceded by the Hanna Band playing the funeral dirge, followed by the members of the United Mine Workers of America, the American Legion, the Knights of Pythias, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Loyal Order of Moose, in all of which organizations Mr. Crawshaw was an honored member. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal Church, of which the decedent and his entire family were devout members, at 10:00 A. M., the comforting and impressive words of the burial service being read by Reverend Francis M. Bacon, took place at the Hanna cemetery, where the burial rituals of the fraternal organizations were read. Salutes were fired, taps sounded by the American Legion, and the earthly remains of a once loving husband and father and an honest and upright citizen were laid to rest. The obsequies were attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends and the floral offerings were many and beautiful. "Sammy," as we who knew and respected him. affectionately called him, was born at Town Gate, Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, on February 22nd, 1886, and came to America in February 1909, entering the service of The Union Pacific Coal Company at Hanna on February 16, 1909, and would have had, if he had lived, twenty years' service on February 16th of this year, making him eligible to become a member of The Union Pacific Coal Company's Old Timers' Association. His record also contains two years' service overseas during the World War, when he was a member of the 3rd Division Canadian Engineers and the flag-draped casket was attended by his comrades in arms, the members of the local Post of the American Legion. Deceased leaves to mourn his untimely departure, his widow, Mrs. Agnes Crawshaw, one son Jackie, aged 15 years, and one daughter, Leah, aged 7 years, all resident of Hanna: and his aged parents, one sister and one brother residing in England. The sincere sympathy of the entire community is extended to his bereaved family and relatives in their hour of sorrow. (UPCCEM, April 1929)
