Note: Obituary: CHESAPEAKE - Edna Lacy, 84, passed away early Christmas morning. Edna had two great loves in life: her family and working with her customers at Towne Bank. Her devotion to both was deep and abiding. Edna is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Stilwill; two sons, Dan Lupton and Tim Lupton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family would like to express profound appreciation to the staff at Commonwealth Memory Care in Great Bridge. Their commitment and compassion were and always will be beyond our ability to express. Thank you to everyone that ever helped us help her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. (www.SturtevantFH.com)
Note: January 4, 2021: Edna was a very gracious and caring person who always brought out the best in everyone. I was fortunate enough to have worked with her learning how to make others feel like they were her best friend. She will be missed. My condolences to the family. (Ward Robinett)

Lane, Viola Mildred Turner "Millie"
Cemetery: Hanna
Plot: 412
Born: June 29, 1928
Died: July 30, 2018
Age: 90 y's, 1 mo., 1 day
Note: Obituary: Viola Mildred Mooring of Hanna, Wyo., passed away July 30, 2018. Millie was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Erna Turner, son Terry Lane, brothers Chuck, Herb, Harvey, Robert and Richard Turner, sisters Marilyn McNew, Hazel Weatherwax, and Lillian Turner. "Millie" spent her last week of life in the care of Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions in Casper, Wyo., surrounded by loving family and wonderful caregivers. Millie Mooring was born June 29, 1928 in Coalmont, Colo., to Harvey and Erna Turner. She shared a rugged, self- reliant childhood with nine siblings on a small ranch on the Little Grizzly Creek twelve miles West of Coalmont. She often shared fond memories of riding horseback to the one room Butler Schoolhouse. When she reached high school age she had to board in Walden, Colo., to attend school and also had a part-time job cleaning cabins to pay for her room and board. She was a very good athlete and while in high school she was invited to go to Denver to play with a professional women's team. She was very proud of that accomplishment. Millie graduated from North Park High School in Walden, Colo., in 1947 and soon found herself married with a young family. Millie moved to the coal town of Hanna, Wyo., in 1960 with her husband, Mason Lane, and their five children. She was a part of the Hanna community until her death. Her children were her priority, and she attended all their sporting events, concerts, and plays. She chaperoned, was a 4-H leader and very active in the PTA where she held several offices including President and was a big part of their school life. She was a playground supervisor, first woman to sit on the Town Council, played pool and won many women's and mixed tournaments, loved to bowl and was on a league in Sinclair for several years, and had large, wonderful gardens and enjoyed her many flowers. She loved to hike in the mountains and could hike with the best of them and collected rocks wherever she went. She loved to fish and was good at it. She enjoyed sewing, reading, pets, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She owned a number of small businesses, tragically lost her oldest son, Terry, in a ranching accident, and added one more family member, a son, Mason. After her divorce from her husband Mason Lane in 1972, she finally settled comfortably as a single, independent woman content with her job as Hanna Postmaster, from which she retired in 1991. Her children hosted her 90th birthday party at the Hanna Rec Center with over 50 of her family and friends in attendance. At her party, Millie was able to rise and give a delightful speech of appreciation to all for their love and care. A part of the Hanna community for 58 years, Millie will be remembered for her smile, love of the mountains and nature, her many stories of growing up in North Park, her concern for others in the community, and love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Millie is survived by one sister, Patricia Sanders (Ron), her five children; Frank Lane (Sandy), Donald Lane (Robin), Pam Paulson, Susan Pickett (Jim), and Mason Lane, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Hanna Recreation Center in Hanna, Wyo., on September 22, 2018 at 11 a.m.

Note: James Larson worked as a Shot Firer in the No. 2 mine. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. James and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. Note: MUCH MONEY ON CORPSE OVER SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS CARRIED BY HANNA MINE VICTIM.
John Larson [James Larson] Did Not Have Faith in Banks and Had His Money with Him When He Died
Special to The Leader.
Hanna, Wyo., July 21. On the body of John Larson, which was recovered from wrecked mine No. 1 last Saturday, was found a purse containing $653.05. Larson had little faith in banks and was in the habit of carrying his savings on his person. He was one of the fifty members of the relief parties that met death in the second explosion of March 29th while endeavoring to rescue the victims of the first explosion. The thirteen bodies so far recovered from the mine by the searching party which is pushing past the second entry were buried as soon after they reached the surface as was possible, this being necessary because of their condition. There have been no further developments of importance resulting from the work of exploring the wrecked workings. (Cheyenne Daily Leader, July 21, 1908)

On Saturday, March 28, 1908 while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. James and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was found on Thursday July 16, 1908, on day 111 after the explosion, identified and removed from the mine. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)
Note: James Larson was killed in the 1908 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company’s No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was buried in one of the many unmarked graves in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Note: Further information was received by Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Lucas of the death of their son, Bernard, who had been killed in action in the Middle east, August 1, 1943. This information was sent by the Rumanian Government, through the American Red Cross. A letter has also been received from Lucas’ Commanding Officer, Brigadier General Ent, praising him for his bravery in a mission over the Rumanian oil fields, which resulted in his death. A later letter to his parents advised that the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross had been awarded posthumously to him for extraordinary achievement while serving in aerial combat against the enemy. Sergeant Lucas was born in Hanna, Wyoming, and graduated from Hanna High School with the class of 1939. He worked for The Union Pacific Coal Company for a year and then entered the University of Wyoming. In June 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, completed a course as radio operator-mechanic at the Air Force Technical School at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and subsequently graduated from an Army Gunnery School in Texas. In May 1943, he left for overseas duty, spending a short furlough with his family prior to leaving. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Lodge of Hanna. Surviving him are his parents; two brothers, Vincent Lucas of Hanna and Lieut. Clarence Lucas of Kentucky; and three sisters, Mrs. William Lowe of Winton and Mrs. William Hapgood and Miss Eileen Lucas of Hanna. To these and to his many friends, the announcement of his death comes as an irreparable loss. We deeply sympathize with members of his immediate family. (UPCCEM, December 1943)

Age: 44 y's, 27 d's
Note: Leonard Luoto was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 4 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Plot 61 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)
Note: October 5, 1933 - Leonard Luoto. Findings of investigation of the accident which occurred in Mine No. 4, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, wherein Leonard Luoto was injured at 11:45 P. M. and died at the Hanna Hospital about two hours later. The accident occurred in Room 10, "E" Dip, 5 Entry, and it was found that Leonard had been engaged in drilling and was working with Andrew Hyvnen, Mike Sevenikr and Edward Atryde. They were shooting top coal and had taken approximately 40 ft. of the upper bench, the place being 26 ft.in height and 30 ft. in width at the point of the accident. They were engaged in drilling holes in the top coal when suddenly a bump occurred and discharged some of the coal, which struck Leonard and caused the injuries from which he died. At the coroner's inquest it was found that these men had taken work in a workmanlike manner when the bump occurred, causing the accident. (MIR)
Note: Leonard Luoto, a Driller in No. 4 Mine, Hanna, was injured October 6th by a fall of top coal in No. 10 Room, E dip, dying in the local hospital a few hours following the accident. Mr. Luoto was a native of Finland and leaves to mourn his untimely end a wife and two children. He had been in the employ of the Company for a period of 19 years. The funeral was held at Hanna on Tuesday, October 10, several relatives from Rock Springs being in attendance. (UPCCEM, November 1933)
Note: Luoto, Leonard, Driller, Hanna No. 4 Mine. FATAL - Crushed chest. Leonard, along with three other drillers, was drilling top coal in the lower workings of Hanna No. 4 Mine. They had drilled and fired one round of holes, trimmed the top, set up the drilling grips and were drilling another round, two men working on the outer lip, while Leonard and his “buddy’ were working on the inner lip. A bump occurred jarring a larger piece of coal off the outer lip which struck Leonard injuring him so severely that he expired a few hours later at the local hospital. With an improved method of shooting the top coal in these rooms, the hazards connected with drilling operations should be lessened to some extent. (UPCCEM, December 1933)
