Cemetery: Hanna
Born: 1880
Died: June 30, 1903
Age: 23 y's
Note: Hanna, Wyo., July 18 - Entry No. 16 was opened yesterday and the relief workers are just beginning to realize the horror of their task. A trip of loaded and empty cars was found scattered about. Many of the cars were nothing more than broken masses of wood and twisted iron, while all had received the full force of the explosion and were damaged more or less. Scattered among the broken cars were the carcasses of the mules, their bodies mangled, and harness broken and portions blown away. The tools of the men were twisted and broken and scattered. In room No. 1 of entry 16 the body of Rudolph Sella [Salo], the fifth to be recovered was found. The remains were burned in a terrible manner and were only recognized after the most careful search for gold filled teeth and other markings. As soon as the bodies were brought to the surface they were prepared for immediate burial. (The Cheyenne Leader, July 18, 1903)
Note: Mr. Salo, a Finnish miner, not married, was killed in the June 30, 1903 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was found at entry 16 room 1 on July 12, 1903, day 13 after the explosion. He was buried in one of the many unmarked graves in the Hanna cemetery.

Note: Obituary: Tony Scarpelli, 95, of Hanna, Wyoming died Sunday June 3, 2012 at his home in Hanna. Tony was raised in Hanna and still lived in the family home he and nine of his siblings were born in. He went to school in Hanna, where he excelled in sports being an all-state basketball player and an All-American Candidate, plus receiving a basketball scholarship to the University of Wyoming, however he had to decline it to take care of his ailing father. Following his schooling he went to work on the Union Pacific Railroad [Union Pacific Coal Company] as a machinist. He entered in the military serving as a gunner off the coast of California. After Pearl Harbor was bombed, he switched to the Army Air Corps as a mechanic, not a sailor, and he was the crew chief in charge of all things mechanical. They assigned him to a C-47 cargo plane and shipped him to England, later to North Africa, then to Sicily and Italy. In 1944 he was ordered to the Pacific. Under extreme conditions, his unit flew planes in and out under enemy fire and for this his unit received the Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation. He was offered another stripe if he would serve another enlistment for the planned Normandy Invasion, but he declined. He had served three years without seeing his family. Returning to Hanna, he again went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad [Union Pacific Coal Company]. After the coal mines closed, he went to work at Shirley Basin as a machinist in the Uranium Mines, retiring in the early 1970's. He never married, choosing to instead to stay in the family home taking care of his parents. Everyone knew him as "Uncle Tony" enjoying his nieces and nephews, and extended families taking them hunting, fishing and teaching them lifelong skills along the way. Tony was often found lending a helping hand to neighbors and friends over the years. He was active in the Hanna Community. In 1999 Tony was recognized for being a life-long resident and for his commitment to his community. He was named King of King Coal Days and Parade Marshall. Tony was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Hanna. A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6680 of Hanna, and the United Mine Workers. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Sam, Joe and Louis Scarpelli and four sisters, Fenus Kimmell, Sue Klobas, Rose Ponzio and Angelina Jussila. Rosary service will be held Saturday June 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hanna with funeral liturgy following at 11:30 a.m. also, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hanna with the Reverend Fr. Died: Sept. 4, 2016
Age: 90 y's, 8 m's, 6 d's
Note: Obituary: Eugene Shea was born Dec. 28, 1925 in Franklin County in eastern Kansas, the eldest of four children of Elmer and Faye Shea (Lantis). He was educated in Kansas schools, graduating from Williamsburg High School in the spring of 1942. He was transferred by the Union Pacific Railroad from Kansas City to Rawlins in April of 1945, as a locomotive fireman for the seventh district. He later worked of the Stanolind Pipeline Co., now known as Amoco Pipeline Co. at various locations in southern Wyoming, northeastern Colorado and Salt Lake City from December 1946 until July 1959. During this same period of time, he served in the 763rd Battalion during the Korean War. He was captain of the guards at the Wyoming State Penitentiary for several years prior to teaching in the vocational school system of the prison for another nine years. During this time, he married Dixie Caldwell and acquired a family of three small daughters. In June of 1979, he left state employment to engage in the securities brokerage business a representative of B. J. Leonard &Co. in the Ferris Hotel building in downtown Rawlins. During the many years he lived in Rawlins, he owned, built and operated numerous residential properties. After semi-retiring he closed his brokerage office in Rawlins and in November 1989, moved to Hanna, Wyoming where he continued to operate the business part time from an office in his home for one more year while speculating in the remolding and selling of a group of foreclosed houses in Hanna, purchased from H.U.D. and the V.A. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Ellen Davis of Hobart Indiana in 1982, his two younger brothers, Lloyd Shea of Augusta, Georgia, and his youngest brother, John Shea of Winfield, Kansas. Eugene was a life member of the Elks Lodge 609 and years ago served two terms as vice president of the Carbon County Peace Officers Association. From childhood, he was an ardent fisherman and has fished many of the water of the West as well as many other places, especially Mexico. For the past thirty years, he has added boating to his fishing. His old Hydra-Swift was a common sight on Seminole Reservoir. He knew every cove, sunken island, rock pile and good fishing spot on the lake. Eugene was an amateur astronomy fan and spent many hours under the night skies with a small telescope and a pair of binoculars, marveling at the enormousness, the complexity, and the variety of the universe. He was a compulsive reader, reading shelves of mostly non-fiction books and magazines. Eugene was not a political type of person, perhaps lacking social graces to a fault. But he was loved by his wife and three children he yearned to call his own. He was liked by most small children and dogs and will be missed by all those he touched during his 90 years on this earth. Eugene was not a religious person. He viewed life, aging and death as natural occurrences, as natural as the changing of the seasons of the year as the earth rotates. On the day of our "Papa Gene's" passing, after a long dry summer, an inch of rain fell on the Upper North Platte Valley preceded by a sky filled with lighting and thunder. A most appropriate send-off for the man we will all miss so dearly. Graveside services for Papa Gene will be held at the Hanna Cemetery Thursday September 8, at 11:00 A.M. with a gathering of friends at the cemetery prior to the service at 10:30 A.M. Thode, Coroner, a verdict was rendered that the accident could have been avoided if the deceased had used more precautions in his work. (MIR)
Note: Killed In The Hanna Mine. S. Simonson, a Miner, Killed by a Coal Falling on Him: Simonson, a coal miner employed in the Union Pacific mines at Hanna, was instantly killed on Tuesday by a piece of slate weighting nearly a ton fell from the roof striking him on the head. John Gustafson, a brother-in-law of the deceased, who was working in the room with Simonson, was also struck with a piece of coal, but escaped without serious injury. Dr. Thode, county coroner, went over to Hanna Wednesday to hold an inquest. Gustafson, Simonson's partner, testified that they had fired a shot about 25 minutes before and had begun to shovel the coal when the roof fell. Other witnesses testified that Simonson and Gustafson had been warned in the morning that the roof of their room, No. 9, was not safe. Gustafson testified that they examined it and thought it was all right. The jury was composed of Lawrence Quealy, Michael Cummings and William Finch. They returned the following verdict: "That the deceased came to his death in No. 1 mine, at Hanna Wyoming, on the first day of March 1898, at about 3 o'clock p.m. by being struck by a piece of the roof in the room in which he was working; and it is the opinion of the jury that the accident could have been avoided if the deceased miner had used more precaution." The deceased has a wife and four children residing in Denver. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Red Man's lodges in Colorado, but it appears that he was in arrears in both organizations. The body was shipped to Denver on Thursday. (Rawlins Semi-Weekly Republican, March 5, 1898)

Note: William Sled of Hanna Called by T. H. Butler: It is with regret that we record the passing of another old timer and fellow worker. William Sled died on Tuesday, February 26th, at his home in Hanna after a lingering illness. Bill, as we affectionately called him, was born on the 27th day of December 1869, in the little town of Carney in Ray Count, Missouri, and when but seven years of age was taken by his parents across the Missouri River to the beautiful old town of Lexington, in Lafayette County, where he was reared to manhood. At the age of thirteen Bill went to work in the coal mines at Lexington. Coming west in 1897, he settled at Rock Springs, obtaining employment with The Union Pacific Coal Company. Later he moved to Hanna where he continued in the service until July 1st, 1928, at which time he was retired on a pension on account of poor health. Mr. Sled was honest and conscientious and a loyal and trusted employee. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church on Saturday, March 2nd, the Rev. J.M. Johnson of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiating. Music was rendered by the ladies of the choir of the First Baptist Church (colored) and the singing was beautiful and impressive. Interment took place in the Hanna cemetery; the remains being attended to their final resting place by a long concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The decedent leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, Freda Belle Sled, to whom the sympathy of this community is extended. (UPCCEM May 1929)

Note: Celebrating a Beautiful Life of Adventure - Cynthia Lee Lupton Stilwill 65 years of age passed away on May 23, 2023. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Edna Lupton and Milton Lupton. She was a true Sagittarian feisty, independent, and adventurous. She loved to travel, and her motto was "Love me love my pets." She was a complex, multifaceted woman that was known for her caring, generous, always ready to help are ways that defined her. The sides of her that few saw were just as vast and complex.
Cynthia is survived by her wife, Anita Tieman; father, Milton Lupton and his wife, Sandy; two brothers, Dan Lupton and his wife, Laura and their daughter, Erin Pease and husband, Toby, and their children, Laura, Jackson, Katie and Danni, Tim Lupton and his wife Teresa, their children, Tara Lupton, Nicholas Lupton and Hayley Lupton; and a sister-in-law, Claudia Thomas. Cynthia was predeceased by her mother, Edna Lupton, her wife, Jill Stilwill and niece, Kelly Lupton.
In many ways her life was like the rugged, beautiful Wyoming landscapes that she so dearly loved. High towering, hard to reach peaks, deep dark valleys that seem endless. Wind and snow that chilled to the bone and warm open prairies that beckoned her to ride forever.
Our wish for Cynthia's remarkable spirit is that her final steps lead her on a journey that brings her to her mother, Jill, all of her pets that predeceased her. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the Hilton Christian Church by Reverend Natalie Chamberlain. (From Dan Lupton)
