Headstone: "Jan. 14, 1901 - June 6, 1920"
Plot: 3
Born: Jan. 14, 1901
Died: June 6, 1920
Age: 19 y's, 4 m's, 22 d's
Note: Another tragedy has been added to the many this little town has had in the past few months. Saturday evening Edward Kangas, the 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mat Kangas boarded the rear coach of a freight train in company with two other young men. The boys were bound for the dance at Medicine Bow, and they thought by riding the freight they would reach their destination considerably earlier than by waiting for No. 6. As the freight slowed down near the Bow young Kangas clambered down from the top and jumped. He lost his balance and fell backwards, striking his head on the rail. The train had advanced some distance before the other boys realized their companion was injured. Hastening back, they found him unconscious on the roadside. He was carried to the Bow, where medical aid was summoned, revealing a fractured skull. The young man was beyond human aid and passed away at an early hour Sunday morning. The funeral was held Monday and was largely attended by the young people who only a few short hours before made up the merry gathering to which the boy was hurrying, when he met his death. The Kangas family, one of the most highly respected in Hanna, was preparing to leave shortly for Oregon and Ed was to have driven their car. His untimely death is deplored by their many friends. Kattelus, Matti (LK) Aka: Katlins, Matt (Boomerang); Kitlins, Matt (CDL)
Cemetery: Unknown
Headstone: None found.
Plot: Unknown
Born: 1854
Died: April 8, 1902
Age: 48 y's
Note: "Buried In A Coal Mine - Matt Katlins, a Hanna Coal Miner, Suffocated Under Coal - Coroner Bennett received word from Hanna yesterday to the effect that a miner had been killed in one of the mines and that an inquest would be necessary, and the officer went down on the afternoon train. Matt Katlins, a miner, while working in entry 18 of mine No. 1 was buried under a huge pile of coal which suddenly descended upon him without warning and before his associates could reach him life was extinct. The body had been taken from under the coal before the coroner arrived. Mr. Bennett immediately impaneled a jury, but little evidence could be obtained as to the cause of the accident as Katlins was working alone at the time. A verdict of accidental death was returned and the company operating the mine was exonerated from any blame - Rawlins Republican." (Semi-Weekly Boomerang, April 14, 1902)
Note: "Miner Killed - Special to Leader. Hanna, Wyo, April 8 - Matt Katlin, a miner, was killed almost instantaneously yesterday in entry No. 8 of No. 1 mine here by the falling of a large mass of rock from the roof of the entry. Katlin was well known here, having worked for a long time in the mines. A coroner's jury was empaneled and a verdict that death was the result of an accident was brought in. (Cheyenne Daily Leader, April 9, 1902)
Note: "On April 8, 1902, Matt Kattelus was killed in a mining accident - by a fall of coal while working in Hanna's No. 1. There was an inquest, the accident was adjudged as such, the coal company held blameless, and Matt's body was placed "in care of his friends, having been taken out of the mine and placed in his coffin" [inquest report]. A record in the "Journal of Pastor Johan Wilhelm Eloheimo." noted that "Matti Jaakonpoika [son of Jacob] Kattelus died 8 April 1902 in a mine accident in Hanna (Carbon County) Wyoming. Buried 10 April 1902. Aged 48 years, 8 months, 3 days. Leaves 2 sons." There is no record of Susanna Kattelus or Matti Kattelus being buried in Carbon or Hanna cemeteries, although they may have been placed in unmarked graves." (The Kattelus Family, Lynne Kadurko)
Note: Matti, a Finnish miner, married with a family, was killed in Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna in 1902. It is not known where he was buried, but it could have been in an unmarked grave in the Hanna cemetery, but there is no evidence of that. (BL)

Klemola. William "Bill" "Klem"
Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "Dec. 30, 1937 -
Plot: 15
Born: Dec. 30, 1937
Died: November 22, 2023
Note: Obituary for William 'Bill' KlemolaWilliam "Bill" Klemola passed away on November 22, 2023 in Torrington, WY due to a sudden illness. Colyer Funeral Home assisted the family with cremation and a memorial service will be held at a later date. A wake has been planned for December 2nd at noon at the Nugget Bar in Hanna, WY.
"Klem", "Coach Klem", "Pa" was born in Hanna Wyoming on December 30, 1937 to Wayne and Helen (Briggs) Klemola. The family moved to Washington during the war where his dad was a welder in the shipyards and his mom was riveter for Boeing. They returned to Hanna after the war and it was there that Klem spent most of his life. He was very active in sports and was quarterback of the 1954 6-man State Championship football team. Upon graduation he attended the University Wyoming where he majored in teaching and minored in science. His senior year he married Charlotte (Mitchell). He took his first teaching job in Rock River where he also coached basketball and track.
They made their home in McFadden where they had two kids, Keri and Buck. In 1966 he took the job as industrial arts teacher and coach in Hanna where he worked until his retirement. John was added to the family in 1968 and Lincoln in 1970. All four kids obtained their education at Hanna and were graduates of H.E.M. Klem touched many lives during his tenure as teacher and coach. He was JV Basketball coach and head Track Coach his entire time at Hanna, and while he was a hard man, he was fair. He always had his students and athletes best interests at heart, and you knew as long as he was yelling at you he cared! Feeding a family of six wasn't easy those days on a teaching salary. Fortunately Klem was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught all his children how to put food on the table as well and some of their fondest memories were being on the mountain or at the lake with him. Klem enjoyed golf and played all the way up to his last few years. Many of his lifelong friendships are a result of his love for the outdoors.
Klem was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his daughter Keri Smith of Rock Springs, WY, son Buck (Susan) Klemola of Torrington, WY, son John (Jodie) Klemola of Laramie, WY, son Lincoln (Michelle) Klemola of Gillette, WY grandsons Sam Smith of Petersburg, IL Aaron Smith of Springfield, IL, Ryan Klemola and Daegan Klemola of Laramie, WY, granddaughters Tressa (Chad) Wellman of Cheyenne, WY, Corrie (Jack) Leiseth of Saratoga, WY, Erika (Philip) Sully of Gilbert, AZ, Harley Klemola of Providence, RI, and Hannah Klemola of Gillette, WY and five great grandsons and three great granddaughters. Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like Henry Birchall - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
Note: James Knox worked as a Foreman of the No. 3 mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men including foreman Knox entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening killing an additional 41 men. James was not found consequently his body was not removed from the mine. (BL)

Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "1884 - 1936"
Plot: 300
Born: 1883
Died: July 30, 1935
Age: 52 y's
Note: Frank Konishi was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 4 mine. He was buried in Plot 300 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)
Note: July 30, 1935 - Frank T. Konishi, Japanese, age 52, married, one dependent child, age 6, employed as a sprinkler and track cleaner in Hanna No. 4 mine, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company was instantly killed about 2:00 p.m. on July 30, 1935, when he was struck by a loaded trip of pit cars in "I" Plane, spout hole 2, North Entry. Konishi was cleaning the track in the spout hole at the time of the accident, and no doubt failed to hear or see the trip that was being lowered to the parting. He had commenced to clean the track from the parting switches and was about in the middle of the spout hole and the center of the track when he was struck by the cars. Accidents of this kind are difficult to avoid when the mine is in operation. It is recommended that work of this kind be done on the off shift in order to eliminate the possibility of being struck by the rope or trip. (MIR)
Note: Konishi, Frank - Japanese, age 52, sprinkler and track cleaner, Hanna No. 4 Mine, Section No. 7. Fatal. Marks the third fatality happening in the mines in 1935. Frank Konishi, a good honest worker, was cleaning track along a rope haulage way that was on a curve stretch of track extending from a panel slope to an entry parting. He had been warned numerous times during the day by both Unit Foreman, motorman and rope rider to look out for moving trips. He apparently failed to hear or see a trip of six loaded cars being lowered onto a parting and two of the cars ran over his body, killing him instantly. All accidents resulting in fatalities are most deplorable for in most instances they are avoidable, this one being no exception. It takes proper training of each individual worker to prevent such occurrences as this one, and each man must be made to understand that chance taking is absolutely prohibited. (UPCCEM, September 1935)
Note: Frank Takagu Konishi, Japanese, 52 years of age, employed as Sprinkler in Mine No. 4, Hanna, was instantly killed on the afternoon of July 30th when struck by a loaded trip. Frank leaves to mourn his sad taking off his widow and one child of six years. Mr. Konishi entered our employ at Hanna in December 1909 and was a member of the Old Timers association with 26 years of service; he was born in Japan, June 15, 1883. Funeral services were held August 1st at the M.E. Church, with interment in the local cemetery. (UPCCEM, September 1935)

Note: June 28, 1930 - J. M. Koosenjons. Findings of the investigation of the fatal accident which occurred June 27th at 10:00 A. M., in Mine No. 4, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, wherein J. M. Koosenjons, American, married, one child, an employee of the Goodman Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Illinois, was instantly killed. J. M. Koosenjons, J. B. Hughes, mechanical foreman for the Union Pacific Coal Company, Wm. Wright, and Joe Jones, Joy operators for the Union Pacific Coal Company, were taking a new type of Goodman Loader into Mine No. 4 to place in No. 2 Room, F Plane, 5 Entry. They had progressed as far as F Plane, No. 4 Entry and at this point it became necessary to apply the haulage rope, which serves F Plane, in order to pull the machine up the pitch. In going thru the spout hole the machine became lodged. Mr. Koosenjons noticed that there were levers protruding on the low side, stepped onto the low side of the machine to remove the levers when suddenly the machine moved, catching Koosenjons between the rib and the machine and killed him instantly. An investigation was held by I. N. Bayless, General Superintendent of the Union Pacific Coal Company, and from the testimonies by those present when the accident occurred, it would appear that the engineer received a signal of one bell, which is the signal to pull. This signal was not given by those who were in charge of the signals at the machine. The machine that was being moved was 6' 3" in width and 22' 7" overall in length, weighing 13 tons. The entry at the point of the accident had a clearance of 2' 7" from the tail on the high side. The hoist that was pulling the machine was approximately 1,800 ft. from the point of the accident and was equipped with a 200 H.P. motor. (MIR)

Note: Charles Katila, February 2, 1929. Findings of the investigation of the accident which occurred in the No. 4 Mine, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, in which Charles Katila, age 54, Finlander, married, was killed. Katila was employed as a track layer and on the morning of the accident was called up to the parting of "F" Plane on the 2nd Entry to repair a spring latch which was not operating correctly. While employed at the job the motor came in and changed the trip on the parting, which caused Katila to leave the latches and step to the low side as the motor had to pass over said switch. It also appears that a trip on the top rope of "F" Plane was at this time standing at the derail switch, which is located about 165 feet above the latches, waiting for the signal light to indicate that the parting was clear. When the motor started out with the loaded trip from the parting, the motorman pulled the signal light switch which indicated to the rope rider on the trip that was at the derail that the parting was clear. The rope rider immediately threw the derail and signaled down his trip. While entering the parting he heard a noise like the trip had derailed and signaled the engineer to stop the trip and while so doing he noticed a light below the trip and when the trip finally came to a stop he saw that Katila had been run over. Immediately getting help, Katila was carried to a suitable place and first aid applied. From observation it would appear that Katila was not aware that this trip was at the derail, as he could not see up to that point as he was working around the curve, and when the motor trip got on the clear he started back up to the latches and upon either seeing the red light on the plane trip coming or hearing it, he started to get out of the way and was struck by the trip, or in attempting to get on the clear he slipped and fell in front of the trip. It has developed since the investigation was made that Katila was trying to get away from the trip when he slipped and fell. (MIR)
Note: Hanna Saddened By the Death of Charles Kotila by T. H. Butler. The community of Hanna was shocked and grieved to learn of the accident in No. 4 Mine on February 22nd which caused the death of Charles Kotila at the Hanna Hospital a few hours later. Funeral services were held at the Finnish Hall on February 27th at 2:00 p. m., where the rituals of the Finnish Society, the Loyal Order of Moose and the United Mine Workers of America were read impressively. Burial took place at the Hanna Cemetery the procession being led by the Hanna band playing a solemn funeral dirge. Charles Kotila was born at Reiskarvi, Finland, on March 24th, 1875, and came to the United States in June 1901. He first located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, later moving to Cambria, Wyoming. He came to Hanna in 1909 and entered the employ of the Union Pacific Coal Company. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Alex Lina of Hibbing, Minnesota, and Miss Ellen Kotila of Fitchburg, Mass. His daughters came to Hanna for the funeral services and to comfort their mother, to whom the sympathy of the community goes out in her loss. (UPCCEM, May 1929)
