Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "1879 - 1929"
Plot: 28
Born: 1886
Died: May 19, 1929
Age: 43 y's
Note: May 19, 1929. James Pappas. Findings of the investigation of the accident at No. 2 Mine, Hanna, property of the Union Pacific Coal Company, which caused the death of James Pappas, Greek, age 43, married. Time of accident - 2:30 P.M. Pappas along with his brother, Nick, was employed as a miner and was engaged in pulling slope pillars between 13 and 15 Entries. At about 1:45 P.M. they had three shots fired in their place by the Shot-firer. After the place was examined by the shot-firer they proceeded to load two cars which were at their place. While loading the cars a slab of coal weighing about three tons rolled off the rib striking Pappas. He fell and his head struck the protruding end of a track tie, which caused head injuries of such nature that death was instantaneous. It appears that Pappas and his brother knew that this piece of coal was parted away from the rib and had previous to the time of the accident tried to bar it off, but were unable to do so. They then proceeded with their work but failed to sprag this piece of coal. Apparently, the concussion of the shots loosened it a little more and when they started to load the cars, they failed to examine it again and the accident occurred a few minutes later. (MIR)
Note: Monument age for James Pappas was age 50.
Note: James Pappas was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 2 mine in Hanna. He was buried in Plot 28 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna No. 1 Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like William "Bill" Pascoe - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
Note: William "Bill" Pascoe worked as a Gas Watchman in the No. 1 mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men including William entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening killing an additional 41 miners. William's body was not recovered from the mine. (BL)

Note: Obituary: Jim Poulos: Hanna - A celebration of life service for Jim Poulos, 86, will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at St. Joseph's Church in Hanna with the Rev. Raymond Grieb officiating. He died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Cheyenne Veteran's Hospital. He had been in declining health since 2005. He was born July 18, 1920, in Hanna, the son of Crete immigrants John and Mary Poulos. He had two sisters Lulu and Angeline, and a brother, Tony. He graduated from Hanna High School and worked briefly for the Union Pacific Railroad before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1940. After basic training in Louisiana, he escorted troops from coast to coast in the buildup to World War II. He was sent to Europe in 1942, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. In April 1945, he was wounded by a sniper's bullet near Leipzig, Germany and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he returned to Wyoming to pursue a career with the Game and Fish Commission. His knowledge of local terrain and wildlife allowed him to pass his exams at the top of his class and become a game warden in 1947. On December 19, 1947, he married Betty Daniels in a civil ceremony in Kimball, Nebraska. Their first home was in Saratoga, but he transferred to Kemmerer in 1950 after the arrival of their daughter, Maryruth. In 1953, Jim returned to Hanna, where he opened the Nugget Bar with his brother, Tony Poulos. He had many passions and prided himself in doing them well. He was an avid cook of baklava, jerky and homemade bread. He had many fishing and hunting trophies. It was near impossible to beat him at billiard and he was a great gardener. His summer vegetable gardens produce corn, sweet onions, squashes, greens and tomatoes. He was a member of the Hanna School Board for 12 years and a generous donor to school activities. He enjoyed quiet mornings in his garden watching the plants grow, sunny autumn days in the Wyoming Mountains and any day hunting or fishing with his son, Tony. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; his son Tony Poulos and his wife, Carol; his daughter Maryruth Wilde and her husband Larry; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Rostad Mortuary in Rawlins is in charge of arrangements. (Casper Star Tribune, April 9, 2009)

Price, Charles A. (MIR); Aka: Price, C. A. (MM)
Cemetery: Saratoga, Wyoming
Born: 1926
Died: Feb. 17, 1972
Age: 46 y's
Note: On February 17, 1972, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Charles A. Price, age 46, married, father of one minor child, was critically injured when he was crushed between the bed and chassis of a Ford 6T1570, 2 1/2-ton dump truck at the Energy Development Company Mine in Hanna. Charles Caudill, Tipple Foreman, stated that Price had driven in with a load of coal, which he dumped. Price told Caudill that because there was not any more coal to haul for a while, he would grease his truck. Price told Caudill that he needed a zerk fitting. Caudill found one and gave it to Price, who was laying on the ground under the truck. Then Caudill and the rest of the crew went up the track to drop some railroad cars down to the coal loading area. Charles Brannon, Maintenance Mechanic at the tipple, had been looking for a zerk fitting also. He back stopped the truck. Price had the dump bed raised. He was standing on the right side of the chassis between the tandem axles. Brannon then went into the control house which was nearby. He heard Price groan. Brannon came out and saw the dump bed down with Price between the dump bed and the chassis of the truck. Brannon stated that he telephoned for the ambulance and then tried to raise the dump bed. He was unable to do so. He called Caudill, who came running with the rest of the crew. Caudill raised the bed. The body was removed. Dwight Briggs, equipment operator, believed that Price was still alive, so he administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the ambulance arrived. The oxygen resuscitation was used and Price was taken to the Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Rawlins, where Dr. Paul pronounced him dead on arrival. Price had left the motor of the truck running. It is believed that Price, while standing on the outside of the truck chassis, laid over it to get a grease fitting on the universal joint of the tandem drive axle. In doing so, it is believed that he inadvertently pulled the safety cable running from the rear of the dump bed to the pressure relief valve, thus allowing the dump bed to come down. Although blocking material was available nearby, the bed was not blocked to prevent it from coming down. Price has been operating heavy equipment and driving trucks for over 20 years. He had been driving a truck for Energy Development Company for approximately four months. L.A. Jones stated that he had instructed Price, when he was hired, never to work under machinery or equipment unless the same was securely blocked to prevent it from falling. Charles died from lacerations of the liver and spleen. Both his adrenal glands were ruptured and he had four broken ribs. His death was caused from internal bleeding. (MIR)
