Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna No. 1 Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men - like Thomas Flint - were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.

The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening killing an additional 41 men. Thomas' body was not removed from the mine. (BL)

Cemetery: Hanna
Headstone: "May 16, 1943; WYOMING; PVT 163 INF 44 DIV"
Plot: 134
Born: 1895 in Greece (Ancestry)
Born: May 21, 1894 (UPCCEM)
Died: May 16, 1943
Age: 48 y's, 11 m's, 25 d's
Note: Gust Fouros, age 48, Greek and single was fatally injured on May 16, at 9:55 p.m. and died at 11:30 p.m. the same day at the Hanna Hospital. The accident occurred in No. 8 room of K 2 Plane, Hanna No. 4 Coal Mine, operated by the Union Pacific Coal Company. On May 17, Hugh McLeod, made an investigation into the accident resulting in the death of the aforesaid. John Kivi, machine runner; Clifford Frazier, machine helper; and D. J. Stevens, driller; made up the crew who were engaged in cutting and drilling No. 8 room of K 2 Plane, Hanna No. 4 Mine. Kivi and Frazier were cutting the place and when they cut about ten feet from the right side toward the left side, they stopped the machine and moved the tail jack pipe so that Fouros and Stevens could start drilling. When the place was cut the machine was pulled back about thirty feet to load it on the traveling truck. Fouros and Stevens had just finished drilling the seventh hole about center of the place which was twenty-seven feet wide. They then proceeded to sharpen the drill bits. Fouros was standing out four feet from the face looking toward the face and Stevens was standing against the face looking out over the room, when a piece of top coal, without warning, struck Fouros on the back, injuring him severely. Recommendations: Owing to a large amount of top coal that is left in the first mining, very little timber was used in the past, but due to changing condition, because of well-defined slips encountered in the top coal, I feel that it would add to the safety if safety props were set while the men are working, cutting, drilling and shooting. Hugh McLeod, State Mine Inspector. (MIR) (BL)
Note: Fouros, Gust, Greek, age 49, single, driller, Section No. 2, Hanna No. 4-A Mine. FATAL. The working place was a strike room in pioneer work. Some very pronounced slips, running nearly parallel to the room, are present in this area. Four men, who composed the cutting and drilling crew, came into this room, and the top was tested while the tracklayers were completing the track. The face was cut, the machine pulled back, and the drillers had completed drilling on the right side of the face. They were standing in front of the last hole drilled, sharpening a drill bit, when a large piece of coal broke off from one of the slips in the top. Gust was caught by the fall of coal. (UPCCEM, July 1943)
Note: The funeral of Gust Fouros was held in the Episcopal Church on May 20th. Mr. Fouros was born in Chania, Crete, on May 21, 1894, and came to the United States in 1913. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by a cousin, Joe Berakis, of Rock Springs. Interment was made in the Hanna Cemetery. (UPCCEM, July 1943)

Fujinami, Seilkichi
Cemetery: Unknown
Born: 1887
Died: June 12, 1951
Age: 64 y's
Note: Seikichi Fujinami died on June 12, 1951, Lyman Fearn, State Coal Mine Inspector, made an investigation into the cause of the injury which occurred to Seikichi Fujinami, Japanese, age 64, married, no children, from which injuries he passed away the same day. Lyman Fearn was accompanied by William Roberts, Federal Coal Mine Inspector, Frank Peternall, Safety Engineer, John Hughes, General Superintendent, Hodge Burress, Mine Superintendent. The men found that Seikichi Fujinami was employed by the Union Pacific Coal Company in the No. 4A Mine in Hanna, as a track man. He was working the 1 North Entry laying track for the Joy unit working the above entry. He had finished his work and was standing on the high side of the entry waiting until the Joy loader had completed the loading of the trip. While in this waiting period a fall of roof and rib coal took place, catching him and causing his injuries. The place at the point of injury was 15 feet wide and 8 feet high. The coal that fell was 18 inches thick, 4 feet long, 3 feet wide, going out in a feathered edge. Three men claimed that the roof in that section had been examined by them personally during the day and that the roof appeared to be good. The members of the crew were: Ted Crombie, John Ever Matson, John F. Reynolds, Wallace Frye with Marion Telin as Unit Foreman. This department recommends that due to the character of the coal in this section being quite wet and does not reveal by sound the true condition of the roof and rib coal, that all lips be sheared or timbered and well-trimmed. (MIR)
