Note: Leonard Lucas Drowned July 29 in Hansen Damn: Leonard Lucas, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Bateman and former Hanna High School athlete was found drowned in Hansen Dam seven miles south of Hanna, July 29. Many attempts were made by his companions to rescue him, but these resulted only in another near drowning. The body was finally recovered by Will Clegg in the late afternoon. Leonard Lucas ws a former graduate of the Hanna High School, and during the four years of his high school life excelled in all sports, being a member of both the football and basketball teams. He was captain of the team that won the championship of Class B at the 14th annual tournament at Laramie and upon graduation was one of the few who received an "honor" sweater for his exceptional athletic ability. He was left to mourn, his mother, Mrs M. Bateman, two sisters, Irene and Elsie Lucas, and two brothers, Thomas and Richard Lucas. Hanna High grieves the loss of one of its most popular and beloved students, and sends its sympathy to Mrs. Bateman and the Lucas family. (The Pioneer, September 1933)
Note: Leonard Lucas Drowned Near Hanna - On July 29, while swimming with three of his friends at Hansen’s Dam, located about eight miles south of Hanna, Leonard Lucas met his death by drowning, his body having been recovered the same day by William Clegg, Jr. Leonard was born at Hanna July 5, 1912, and in early years was baptized and confirmed in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. He attended the local schools and graduated from Hanna High School May 29th, 1931. He was a splendid athlete, being captain of the Hanna High School team, and was largely responsible for the team’s success during 1931 when it captured the championship in basketball for Class “B” during the state tournament in Laramie. Funeral services were in charge of Rev. Evjen of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, interment at Hanna Cemetery on August 2. The sympathy of the entire Union Pacific family is extended to his mother, two sisters, Elsie and Irene, and two brothers, Thomas and Richard. (UPCCEM, September 1933)
