A Great Trumpet is Stilled
Rawlins Daily Times May 12, 1959
There will be no more “Music by Mark Jackson” at the dances in Carbon County. The golden-toned trumpeter played his last dance Saturday night in Sinclair and died - probably as he had always hoped he would die - suddenly, from a heart attack the following morning. He enjoyed life up to the very last with the instrument he loved most, his trumpet. For more than 35 years he brought happiness, rhythm and entertainment to thousands of persons with his great trumpet playing and his inimitable entertainment. His style, his tones and his arrangements will be stilled forever because they were such a part of him - trumpet playing that was typical Mark Jackson; an artistry that is not to be copied or mimicked. And, as such, will be missed by thousands in Carbon County. Of Mark Jackson it can be unqualifiedly stated that he brought to Carbon County more dance music than any other person. He not only furnished much of the music himself throughout the years, but also succeeded in bringing most of the nation’s top dance bands to his Garden Spot Pavilion in Elk Mountain. Mark Jackson was always available and willing to furnish music and entertainment-no matter where of what the occasion might be. His jaunty, gayly colored model T ford, a familiar part of nearly every celebration in Carbon County will be missed. It was another Mark Jackson innovation that had won widespread fame and favor. To his popular and well-known musical associate down through the years, nimble-fingered banjoist, Leo Schinkel, Mark Jackson’s death will be an irretrievable loss. The two made up a great team, both in music and entertainment and the many laughs and haws of fun they furnished will live in the memories of thousands. Yes, there will be no more “Music by Jackson”- and all of Carbon County will be sadder for the passing of the fine musician and his golden-toned trumpet. (Rawlins Daily Times May 12, 1959)
