Life Story
1880 April 22: Gus Edward Siltamaki was born in Alaharma, Finland to Gust and Wilhelmina Siltamaki. (US Draft Records)
1891 March 1: Mary was born in Rock Springs.
1910: Gus Siltamaki, age 30, was living in District 6, Carbon, Wyoming. He was single, age 30, living with his brother-in-law August Hippi. He was a Grocery Store Salesman by occupation. (1910 US Census)
1920: Gus Siltamaki, age 39 was living in Hanna, Carbon, Wyoming. He was married to Mary Siltamaki and a Store Manager by occupation. (1920 US Census)
1930: Gus Siltamaki was married to Mary Siltamaki. He was head of house, a Naturalized Citizen, owned his own home and was an Insurance Agent by occupation. (1930 US Census)
1932-1941: Gus Siltamaki operated the Peacock Coal Company underground mine at Elmo. The mine opened production of coal in 1932 and closed in 1941. The mine operated at Elmo for 9 years. During that time, it produced 11,894 tons of coal with a peak work force of 11 workers in 1932. No deaths were reported in the mine.
1936: The Nugget Coal Company opened the Nugget No. 1 mine just South of Elmo.
1937: The Monolith Open Pit Mine near Elmo opened coal production. The mine closed production in 1969.
1940: Gus Siltamaki was married to Mary Siltamaki. He was living in Elmo, Wyoming, owned his own house, a proprietor by occupation. (1940 US Census)
1942 April 27: Gus Edward Siltamaki registered for the World War II draft. He was living in Hanna, Wyoming, age 62, born in Alaharma, Finland, employed by A. S. Allen in Hanna, Carbon, Wyoming. He was 5' 9", 150 pounds with blue eyes, light complexion and blonde hair. His next of kin was listed as Charles Siltamaki. (US Draft Records)
1950: Gus Siltamaki was married to Mary Siltamaki and living in Elmo, Wyoming. (1950 US Census)
1952 October 15: Gus Edward Siltamaki died in Elmo, Carbon, Wyoming from a heart attack. He was buried in Laramie, Wyoming. (Wyoming Death Records)
HANNA --- (Special) --- Funeral services for Gus E. Siltamaki, 72, Hanna, who died Wednesday, will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Hanna Episcopal Church. The Rev. Harvard Wilber will officiate. The Peterson mortuary at Hanna is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery, Laramie. Mr. Siltamaki was born at Herma, Finland, April 22, 1880. He had lived in Carbon County 50 years. The retired clerk’s death was attributed to a heart attack. His widow, Mrs. Mary Siltamaki of Hanna, and three sons, Raymond, Bobby, and Harold, all of California, survive. (Newspaper Unknown)
1951: Over the objection of Hanna and Elmo town and mine officials, the state Highway department relocated Highway 30, also called the Lincoln Highway, from the center of town to about one mile north of town. The move severely affected local businesses. The present day raised paved road out of Hanna was built to meet the new Highway 30.
1958 November 20: Mary N. Siltamaki died in Wyoming and was buried in the Greenhill Cemetery in Laramie, Wyoming. (US Grave Index) (Wyoming Death Records)
Mrs. Mary N. Siltamaki, 67, long-time resident of Hanna, died about 10:15 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since last July. She was born in Rock Springs March 1, 1891 and had lived there until she married Gus. E. Siltamaki. Siltamaki preceded his wife in death Oct. 15, 1952. Following their marriage they moved to Carbon County, where they made their home in Elmo, Carbon, and Hanna. Survivors include two sons, Raymond and Robert, both of Burbank, Calif.; a brother, John Norbeck of Michigan; a step sister, Mrs. Kerhanen of Rock Springs; and five grandchildren. Another son, Harold died in California Aug. 27, while Mrs. Siltamaki was in the hospital here. She was a member of the Episcopal Church in Hanna, the Rebekah Lodge of Elk Mountain, the VFW Auxiliary in Rawlins; and the Eagles Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and Pythian Sisters all at Hanna.Funeral arrangements are pending at the Rasmusson-Shriner Mortuary.
