Life Story
1865: John B. Evans was born in Wales.
1869 May 26: Caroline Jones was born in Cwmdu, Maesteg, Glamorgan, Wales, UK to John Paul and Margaret Jones.
1881: Caroline Jones was living in Llanwonno, Glamorgan, Wales.
1887 December: Caroline Jones and John B. Evans married in Wales.
1891: Caroline (Jones) and John B. Evans immigrated to the United States. Caroline was about 19 years old when she immigrated. Her mother and father John Paul and Margaret Jones immigrated to Carbon several years earlier in 1888.
1894 December 11: Willie Christopher Evans, Caroline (Jones) Evans and John B. Evans' child died in Carbon, Wyoming and was buried there. He was 5 years, 7 months and 9 days old at the time of his death. (Headstone Carbon Cemetery)
Burned to Death
Last Monday afternoon while Willie Evans, the 4-year-old son of John Evans of Carbon, and another boy were playing together at Mr. Jackson's residence, the clothes of the Evan’s boy caught fire and while running the flames were so fanned that the clothes on the front of his body were all burned off and the flesh so badly burned. He was so severely burned that at about 6 o'clock Tuesday evening he died from the effects. (Cheyenne Daily Leader, December 15, 1894)
1894 March 2: Talyseine Evans was born to Caroline and John B. Evans. Caroline died in Carbon, Wyoming 12 days after Talyseine was born. (Headstone Carbon Cemetery)
1894 March 14: Caroline (Jones) Evans died in Carbon, Wyoming. She was 24 years, 9 months and 16 days old at the time of her death. She was buried in the Carbon cemetery in the southwest corner next to her child Willie Christopher Evans. (Headstone Carbon Cemetery)
John B. and Caroline (Jones) Evans had four children together:
- David John Evans (1889 - 1919) Born in Wales.
- Willie Christopher Evans (1890 - 1894) Born in Wales.
- Evan Richard "Red" Evans (1892 - 1963) Born in Carbon, Wyoming.
- Taylseine "Tally" Evans (1894 - 1912) Born in Carbon, Wyoming.
1905: John B. Evans married Ellen Griffiths of Hanna.
1908 March 28: John B. Evans was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine Explosion in Hanna, Wyoming.
John Evans worked as a Gas Watchman in the No. 1 Mine. On Saturday, March 28th, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men including John entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10.
The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening killing another 41 miners. John's body was not found consequently it was not removed from the mine. (BL)

6. W. H. Pascoe [William H. Pascoe] - gas watchman, worked in No. 1 mine.
7. John Rimmer - gas watchman, worked in No. 1 mine.
8. Harry Lyon - gas watchman, worked in No. 1 mine.
9. Robert Herrin - gas watchman, worked in No. 1 mine.
10. P. A. Boyd – dumper, worked in the No. 1 mine.
11. John Ikonen - rollerman, worked in No. 1 mine.
12. Gabriel Lahte [Gabe Lahti] - timberman, worked in No. 1 mine.
13. Emil Silvast [E. Silfast] - timberman helper, worked in No. 1 mine.
14. Thomas Flint - mason, worked in No. 1 mine.

Hanna Monument: At the top of Hanna Hill stands a Memorial Monument dedicated to the men who lost their lives in the explosions of the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 Mine in Hanna. The Monument also marks the area where 28 of the men were killed, but not recovered and their bodies remain at the bottom of the mine.
